Pulsed optomechanical measurements enable squeezing, nonclassical state creation, and backaction-free sensing. We demonstrate pulsed measurement of a cryogenic nanomechanical resonator with record precision close to the quantum regime. We use these to prepare thermally squeezed and purified conditional mechanical states, and to perform full state tomography. These demonstrations exploit large vacuum optomechanical coupling in a nanophotonic cavity to reach a single-pulse imprecision of 9 times the mechanical zero-point amplitude xzpf. We study the effect of other mechanical modes that limit the conditional state width to 58xzpf, and show how decoherence causes the state to grow in time.

Thermal relaxation time and photothermal optomechanical force in sliced photonic crystal silicon nanobeams
Shakespeare, Cliona; Kumar, Arvind S.; Muhonen, Juha T. (Optica Publishing Group, 2024)Optomechanical devices based on sliced silicon photonic crystal nanobeams could have several use cases in future quantum technologies, especially as quantum transducers between different quantum systems. To create the ... -
Optomechanical Simulations for Optimizing Spin-Phonon-Photon Coupling in a Silicon Nanobeam
Ahopelto, Simeoni (2024)In optomechanical systems, the light is utilized to measure tiny mechanical displacements of matter. Creating a confined electric inside an optical cavity makes small fluctuations in a mechanical system visible. This ... -
Theory of phase-mixing amplification in an optomechanical system
Ockeloen-Korppi, C. F.; Heikkilä, Tero; Sillanpää, M. A.; Massel, Francesco (Institute of Physics Publishing Ltd., 2017)The investigation of the ultimate limits imposed by quantum mechanics on amplification represents an important topic both on a fundamental level and from the perspective of potential applications. We discuss here a novel ... -
The effects of ion implantation damage to photonic crystal optomechanical resonators in silicon
Shakespeare, Cliona; Loippo, Teemu; Lyyra, Henri; Muhonen, Juha T. (IOP Publishing, 2021)Optomechanical resonators were fabricated on a silicon-on-insulator substrate that had been implanted with phosphorus donors. The resonators' mechanical and optical properties were then measured (at 6 K and room temperature) ... -
Position quadrature measurements of a nanomechanical resonator using pulsed optomechanics
Männikkö, Milla (2023)Mittaustekniikan kehityksen myötä on ilmennyt, että tänä päivänä yhä useammin mittatarkkuutta rajoittavat kvanttimekaaniset ilmiöt. Tämä kvanttimekaniikan tuoma raja mittaustarkkuudelle voidaan kuitenkin väistää nokkelalla ...
