Syftet med pro gradu - avhandlingen var att undersöka hur tävlingsidrottande gymnasieelever uppfattar mental styrka och dess samband med idrottsprestationen. Fyra idrottande ungdomar på nationell nivå deltog i undersökningen. Undersökningen utfördes kvalitativt, genom öppna intervjuer. Resultaten visar att idrottande gymnasieelever upplever att mental styrka har fem olika delområden. Dessa är självförtroende, att återhämta sig efter besvikelse, hantering av press, målmedvetenhet samt motivation och fokus. Dessutom framkom den mentala träningen starkt i intervjuerna, så mental träning blev en egen, sjätte huvudkategori. Resultaten i denna undersökning visar att idrottande gymnasieelever upplever mental styrka liknande som idrottare i tidigare undersökningar. Idrottarna upplevde ofta att det viktigaste delområdet i mental styrka var det som de själva saknade. Idrottarna hade mycket kunskap om mental styrka men det svåra verkar vara att applicera den kunskapen till det egna livet. Denna undersökning ger en inblick i hur idrottande gymnasieelever kan tänka kring mental styrka, men på grund av det låga antalet deltagare kan man inte dra långtgående slutsatser på basen av denna undersökning. The aim of this study was to find out what adolescent athletes think mental toughness is and what they think the connection between mental toughness and sports performance is. Four national level competing athletes in high school age participated in the study. This qualitative research was done through open interviews. Five different subareas of mental toughness occurred through the interviews. These were selfconfidence, to recover from disappointments, pressure management, goal orientation as well as motivation and focus. In addition mental training emerged strongly in the interviews, so mental training became a separate, sixth main category. The results from this study show that high school athletes experience mental toughness similarly to athletes in earlier studies. The athletes often experienced that the most important subarea of mental toughness was what they themselves lacked. The athlete’s hade a lot of knowledge about mental toughness but the hard thing seemed to be to apply this knowledge into their own lives. This study gives a glimpse of how high school athletes can think about mental toughness, but because of the low amount of participants one cannot draw far-fetched conclusions on the basis of this study. More research on this area is still needed. ...
