Tämän tutkielman aiheena on eleet. Tutkielmassa tarkastellaan, kuinka viittomakielen tulkkiopiskelijat pelkästään eleitä käyttämällä kertoivat nähdyn animaatiofilmin tapahtumat, ja millaisia eleitä sen kerronnassa käytettiin. Opiskelijat kertoivat saman animaatiofilmin tapahtumat kahdesti. Näitä eri kerroilla tuotettuja tarinoita verrataan toisiinsa.
This master’s thesis examines how some students of Finnish Sign Language interpreting expressed with gestures the events of the cartoon they saw and what kind of gestures they used. The students did this exercise twice, first without prior knowledge of sign language and for a second time after some sign language studies. The results of the two exercise instances are compared and the differences analyzed. The theoretical background of the thesis is formed by the study of gestures based on spoken language, and the idea brought forth by McNeill (1992) and Kendon (2004) concerning the significance of gestures as a part of language and communication. The gesture continuum as popularized by McNeill is used as an analytical tool for the categorization of gestures. In the thesis the concept of ‘gestural narration’ is used convey retelling the cartoon source material exclusively with gestures. The research material used in this thesis is a part of a larger depository of pilot study data gathered during the training of sign language interpreting students in Finland by Humak and in Utrecht, Holland. The material consists of ten recorded gestural narrations by five students, which were annotated with ELAN software and analyzed. The analysis shows that the students’ gestural narrations consisted of iconic gestures, deictic gestures, facial expressions, pantomimes, and signs. Iconic gestures comprised the majority in both exercise instances, with the amount of signs increasing in the second instance. The analysis points to gestures forming a potential system of communication on their own. The gestures accompanying spoken language, expression consisting solely of gestures, and sign language have discernible structural similarities. The role of gestures is becoming more significant in study of sign language and the training of sign language interpreters, so the results concerning gestural narration can be utilized in sign language teaching and gesturality examination. A possible future study could consist of producing further gestural narrations of the aforementioned cartoon, this time by persons fluent in sign language, and examining the interweaving of gesturality and sign language in such cases.en
