Avoimuus ja ongelmanratkaisutaidot sekä niiden vaikutukset käyttäjäkokemukseen ikäihmisillä ja lapsilla

Abstract

Tutkimus kartoittaa ikäihmisten teknologiankäyttötaitoja sekä niihin vaikuttavia tekijöitä. Tutkimuksen kohteena ovat Suomessa asuvat yli 65-vuotiaat ikäihmiset. Verrokkiryhmänä ovat alle 13-vuotiaat lapset. Tutkimus on käyttäjätutkimus, jossa tutkittiin eroa koetussa ja mitatussa käytettävyydessä kahdella eri ikäryhmällä. Tutkittavat tekivät erilaisia tehtäviä pöytätietokoneella ja tabletti-tietokoneella. Käytettävyyttä tutkittiin suorituskykymittauksilla ja käyttäjäkokemusta ääneenajattelulla ja kyselylomakkeilla. Kyselylomakkeilla selvitettiin tutkittavien kokemia erilaisia tunteita, esimerkiksi ärtymystä, turhautumista ja määrätietoisuutta tehtävien teon aikana. Taustalla vaikuttavia tekijöitä tutkittiin persoonallisuustestillä, joka mittaa avoimuutta uusille kokemuksille. Taustavaikutuksia tutkittiin myös kyselylomakkeilla, joilla kartoitettiin laitteiden käyttökokemuksia ja ongelmanratkaisutaitoja. Ikäihmisten tuloksia verrattiin lasten tuloksiin. Tulokset on purettu tilastollisin testein ja sisällönanalyysilla. Ikä vaikutti käytettävyyteen tablettilaitteella tehdyissä tehtävissä. Ikäihmiset olivat hitaampia ja saivat heikommin tehtäviä suoritettua lapsiin verrattuna. Tietokoneella tehdyissä tehtävissä eroa ei ollut. Koetussa käytettävyydessä ei kummankaan laitteen osalta ollut eroa lasten ja ikäihmisten välillä tilastollisin testein mitattuna. Tyytyväisyydessä ei ollut suuria eroja, turhautuminen ei korostunut kummallakaan laitteella eikä kummallakaan ikäryhmällä. Ääneenajattelussa ikäihmiset tuottivat enemmän tunneilmaisuja lapsiin verrattuna, mutta laitekohtaiset erot eivät olleet suuria. Avoimuus uusille kokemuksille ei tämän tutkimuksen mukaan vaikuta koettuun tai mitattuun käytettävyyteen eikä käyttäjäkokemukseen. Ongelmanratkaisutaidot sitä vastoin vaikuttavat, lapsilla oli paremmat ongelmanratkaisutaidot ja he olivat tablettilaitteella hiukan nopeampia ja saivat tehtäviä enemmän valmiiksi verrattuna ikäihmisiin. Lapset olivat myös määrätietoisempia kuin ikäihmiset.

This thesis will identify technology using skills of older adults, as well as user experience. Subject to this study are Finnish older adults aged more than 65 years. In the control group are children under the age of 13. This study examines usability, user experience and factors that affects to them. The study is a user research –study which examines the differences in experienced and measured usability in two different age groups. The study includes two different devices, a desktop computer and a tablet computer. Test groups did a variety of tasks on both platforms. Usability was examined by task performance. User experience was examined by think-aloud and questionnaires. The questionnaires measured a variety of different feelings, for example, irritation, frustration and determination during the tasks. The background variables were examined by questionnaires that included questions about experiences of devices and problem solving skills. One factor is openness to new experiences which was measured by a personality test. Results were analysed with statistical tests and content analysis. The results were compared between older adults and children. Age was a factor in measured usability of tablet computers. Older adults were slower and completed less tasks compared to the children. The difference did not appear in tasks with computers. Both groups completed almost the same amount of tasks. Computer was also more effective, tasks were done quicker than with a tablet computer. There was not any difference between children and older adults in statistically measured user experience. There were no significant differences in satisfaction. Frustration was not a factor in either of the groups nor the devices. In think-aloud older adults produced more expressions of feelings compared to children, but the differences between devices were not significant. In this study, openness to new experiences wasn’t a factor in measured and experienced usability nor user-experience. Problem solving skills on the other hand might be. The children had better problem solving skills, and they were found to be slightly faster and completed more tasks compared to the elderly. The children were also more determined than older adults.
