The wide-ranging Eurasian common lizard Zootoca vivipara (Lichtenstein, 1823) is remarkably uniform morphologically but highly varied in its karyotype. Previous studies have revealed two distinctly different chromosomal forms of Z. v. vivipara in the Baltic basin. Moreover, a zone of secondary contact between these forms has been localized on the southern Baltic Sea seashore. Intraspecific karyotype diversity for Z. vivipara and new zones of secondary contact have recently been suggested for other parts of the Baltic Sea seashore. We studied the karyotype of Z. vivipara in central, western and northern parts of Finland. All the individuals karyotyped represented the Russian form of Z. v. vivipara that differs from the western form of the subspecies located at the southern and western Baltic Sea seashore. Together with previous data sets, our results suggest intraspecific karyotype diversity in the northern and northwestern parts of Fennoscandia. The results give support to the hypothesis of Z. vivipara’s re-colonization of the Baltic Sea basin. Moreover, the results support the previous observations of Voipio (1961, 1968 and 1969) who has reported variability in the shield pattern of Z. vivipara in the same region.

Should dispersers be fast learners? : Modeling the role of cognition in dispersal syndromes
Liedtke, Jannis; Fromhage, Lutz (John Wiley & Sons, 2021)Both cognitive abilities and dispersal tendencies can vary strongly between individuals. Since cognitive abilities may help dealing with unknown circumstances, it is conceivable that dispersers may rely more heavily on ... -
Adaptive Management as a Vehicle to Achieve Sustainability of Boreal Forests : A Historical Review from Fennoscandia to Minnesota
Kunnas, Jan; Bosari, Bruno (Springer, 2021)Located solely in the northern hemisphere, boreal forests contain an estimated one-third of Earth’s forested land. The purpose of this work aimed at reviewing the evolution of approaches in land planning and management of ... -
Tracing the origin of vagrant Siberian songbirds with stable isotopes : the case of Yellow-browed Warbler (Abrornis inornatus) in Fennoscandia
Jong, Adriaan de; Torniainen, Jyrki; Bourski, Oleg V.; Heim, Wieland; Edenius, Lars (Suomen lintutieteellinen yhdistys, 2019)Vagrant birds are mesmerizing birdwatchers worldwide, but the nature of vagrancy and the true origin of the vagrants are poorly known. To Western Europe, the massive Siberian land mass delivers most of the vagrant ... -
Long-Term Climate Trends and Extreme Events in Northern Fennoscandia (1914–2013)
Kivinen, Sonja; Rasmus, Sirpa; Jylhä, Kirsti; Laapas, Mikko (MDPI AG, 2017)We studied climate trends and the occurrence of rare and extreme temperature and precipitation events in northern Fennoscandia in 1914–2013. Weather data were derived from nine observation stations located in Finland, ... -
Continuous cover forestry is a cost-efficient tool to increase multifunctionality of boreal production forests in Fennoscandia
Peura, Maiju; Burgas Riera, Daniel; Eyvindson, Kyle; Repo, Anna; Mönkkönen, Mikko (Elsevier, 2017)Earlier research has suggested that the diversification of silvicultural strategies is a cost-efficient tool to ensure multifunctionality in production forests. This study compared the effects of continuous cover forestry ...
