Tutkimuksen tausta ja tarkoitus Allergioiden esiintyvyys on kasvanut viime vuosikymmenten aikana läntisissä teollisuusmaissa. Allergioiden esiintyvyyden ja fyysisen aktiivisuuden yhteys on epäselvä, sillä liikunta saattaa edistää herkistymistä hengitettäville allergeeneille, mutta toisaalta tarkoituksenmukaisen harjoittelun ymmärretään vahvistavan immuniteettia. Tämän tutkimuksen tarkoituksena on selvittää, onko nuorten tyttöjen allergioiden esiintyvyys muuttunut 7 vuotta kestäneen pitkittäistutkimuksen aikana ja onko allergioiden esiintyvyydessä eroja asuinympäristön tai fyysisen aktiivisuuden suhteen. Tutkimusaineisto ja menetelmät Aineisto, johon kuului 396 tyttöä, kerättiin vuosina 1999-2007 Jyväskylässä. Aineistonkeruussa käytettiin Maailman terveysjärjestön (WHO) määrittelemää terveyskyselylomaketta, jossa selvitettiin tyttöjen henkilökohtaisia taustamuuttujia ja terveystottumuksia. Aineiston analysointi toteutettiin IBM SPSS Statistics 20 -ohjelmalla. Allergioiden esiintyvyyttä tarkasteltiin ristiintaulukoinnin avulla ja Khiin neliö -testillä selvitettiin, oliko aineistossa tilastollisesti merkitseviä eroja. Allergioiden esiintyvyyden ja fyysisen aktiivisuuden määrän (METh) yhteyttä tutkittiin Mann-Whitney U –testillä. Tulokset Allergioiden esiintyvyys lisääntyi aineistossa (n=96) noin 31 % (p=.012). Eniten lisääntyivät hengitystieallergiat, joiden esiintyvyys kasvoi 20 % (p=.001).
Background and purpose The prevalence of allergies has increased in the past few decades in Western industrialized countries. The association between the prevalence of allergies and physical activity is unclear, as exercise may contribute to the sensitization of respiratory allergens. On the other hand, moderate exercise training is considered to strengthen the immune system. The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of allergies in young girls in 7-year longitudinal study, and whether there are differences in the prevalence of allergies depending on the living environment or physical activity habits. Methods The data included questionnaires filled by 396 girls collected during the years 1999 to 2007 in Jyväskylä. The health questionnaire used for the collection of the data is by World Health Organization (WHO). Questionnaire surveyed the girls' personal background variables and health habits. This study examined the prevalence of allergic diseases and physical activity habits. The analysis was carried out using IBM SPSS Statistics 20 software. The prevalence of allergies was examined using cross-tabulation and the Chi-square test. The relationship between the prevalence of allergies and the amount of physical activity (METh) was examined using Mann-Whitney U test. Results The prevalence of allergies (n = 96) increased about 31% (p=.012). Respiratory allergies increased about 20% (p=.001). There was no significant difference in the prevalence of allergies between different living environments at baseline. At the end point the prevalence of allergies was 56% in the city and 33% outside the city (p=.021). The average weekly physical activity was 154 (±185) METh in non-allergic girls and 175 (±196) METh in allergic girls at baseline (n.s.), while the amount of physical activity was 242 (±274) METh in non-allergic girls and 252 (±300) METh in allergic girls at the end point (n.s.). There were no differences in the prevalence of allergies comparing different types of exercise. The prevalence of allergies was not associated with changes in the level of physical activity. Conclusion The increase in the prevalence of allergies seems still to continue in the 2000s in Central Finland. Especially the prevalence of genetic IgE-mediated respiratory allergies increased in subjects during adolescence. It is possible that sensitization has occurred earlier and intense allergen exposure has resulted in onset of allergic symptoms. The prevalence of allergies was associated neither with living nor with physical activity habits. However, physical activity seems not to have protective effect on allergies because there was no significant difference in the prevalence of allergies between the groups according to the level of physical activity. The difference in the prevalence of allergies between the city and outside the city supports previous research findings that suggest environment having a significant role in onset of allergic symptoms.en
