Optimal inter-stimulus interval for interpolated twitch technique when using double pulse stimulation
Interpolated twitch technique is a method frequently used to assess voluntary activa- tion. This method uses electrically evoked twitch superimposed on the voluntary activi- ty and its comparison with the twitch in rested muscle i.e. control twitch, to evaluate completeness of muscle activation. The purpose of this study was to investigate the ef- fect of interval in paired stimulation on control twitch in young and elderly individuals with bent and flexed knee positions. Supramaximal electrical stimulation consisted of one single stimulus and eight paired stimulation with intervals from 5 to 40ms, with increments of 5ms. In evoked twitches normalized peak torque amplitude (NPT), time to peak torque (TPT), half-relaxation time (HRT), maximal rate of torque development (RTD) were calculated. Although all parameters were slightly different in young adults compared to elder ones, the difference reached significance only in shorter TPT and HRT for the former, a phenomenon attributed to the slowing of muscle contractile me- chanics with ageing. In both groups the highest RTD and NPT were observed with shorter inter-stimulus intervals i.e. 5 and 10ms. This may be attributed to a summation effect and/or a less time available for the longer-latency reflex effects of electrical stim- ulation to affect the torque.

Gating Patterns to Proprioceptive Stimulation in Various Cortical Areas : An MEG Study in Children and Adults using Spatial ICA
Vallinoja, Jaakko; Jaatela, Julia; Nurmi, Timo; Piitulainen, Harri (Oxford University Press, 2021)Proprioceptive paired-stimulus paradigm was used for 30 children (10-17 years) and 21 adult (25-45 years) volunteers in magnetoencephalography (MEG). Their right index finger was moved twice with 500-ms interval every 4 ± ... -
Stimuli and sensors that initiate skeletal muscle hypertrophy following resistance exercise
Wackerhage, Henning; Schoenfeld, Brad J.; Hamilton, D. Lee; Lehti, Maarit; Hulmi, Juha (American Physiological Society, 2019)One of the most striking adaptations to exercise is the skeletal muscle hypertrophy that occurs in response to resistance exercise. A large body of work shows that a mammalian target of rapamycin complex 1 (mTORC1)-mediated ... -
Evoked responses to transcranial and electrical stimulation during isometric and lengthening contractions of the soleus muscle
Alexandrou, Anna Maria (2011)The aim of this study was to assess differences in motor control between isometric and lengthening contractions of the soleus muscle. Evoked responses to TMS (MEPs) and electrical stimulation of the peripheral nerve ... -

Zhang, Xukai; van der Molen, M. J. W.; Otieno, Susannah C. S. A.; He, Zongling; Leppänen, Paavo H. T.; Li, Hong (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2022)Pursuing dating relationships is important for many people’s well-being, because it helps them fulfill the need for stable social relationships. However, the neural underpinnings of decision-making processes during the ... -
Common and separable behavioral and neural mechanisms underlie the generalization of fear and disgust
Wang, Jinxia; Sun, Xiaoying; Becker, Benjamin; Lei, Yi (Elsevier BV, 2022)Generalization represents the transfer of a conditioned responses to stimuli that resemble the conditioned stimulus (CS). Previous studies on generalization of defensive avoidance responses have primarily focused on fear ...
