We compared decomposition processes of three deciduous tree leaves (Alnus sp., Betula sp., and Populus tremula) in lake water together and without lake water microbiome, which was killed by autoclaving to separately examine the microbial community succession and decomposition process without the effect of lake water microbiome. We followed microbial activity and community succession during the first three weeks and quantified microbial biomass and the proportion of fungal versus bacterial decomposers by sterol and phospholipid fatty acid (PLFA) analyses.
The present dataset contains the raw sequencing files that were used to identify the microbial and fungal communities of the samples collected during the study.

Comprehensive dataset of shotgun metagenomes from oxygen stratified freshwater lakes and ponds
Buck, Moritz; Garcia, Sarahi L.; Fernandez, Leyden; Martin, Gaëtan; Martinez-Rodriguez, Gustavo A.; Saarenheimo, Jatta; Zopfi, Jakob; Bertilsson, Stefan; Peura, Sari (Nature Publishing Group, 2021)Stratified lakes and ponds featuring steep oxygen gradients are significant net sources of greenhouse gases and hotspots in the carbon cycle. Despite their significant biogeochemical roles, the microbial communities, ... -
Allochthonous carbon is a major regulator to bacterial growth and community composition in subarctic freshwaters
Roiha, Toni; Peura, Sari; Cusson, Mathieu; Rautio, Milla (Nature Publishing Group, 2016)In the subarctic region, climate warming and permafrost thaw are leading to emergence of ponds and to an increase in mobility of catchment carbon. As carbon of terrestrial origin is increasing in subarctic freshwaters ... -
Two hundred and fifty-four metagenome-assembled bacterial genomes from the bank vole gut microbiota
Lavrinienko, Anton; Tukalenko, Eugene; Mousseau, Timothy A.; Thompson, Luke R.; Knight, Rob; Mappes, Tapio; Watts, Phillip C. (Nature Publishing Group, 2020)Vertebrate gut microbiota provide many essential services to their host. To better understand the diversity of such services provided by gut microbiota in wild rodents, we assembled metagenome shotgun sequence data from a ... -
Local eukaryotic and bacterial stream community assembly is shaped by regional land use effects
