This dataset contains raw data points of (1) phage-bacterium co-evolution experiment (flavobacterium columnare colony counts, phage counts, bacterial growth characteristics and number of CRISPR-Cas spacers) and (2) from competition experiment between Flavobacterium columnare and Aeromonas sp. For detailed method description, see the attached Documentation file.

Memoirs of a fish pathogen: how CRISPR-Cas captures phage encounters in Flavobacterium columnare
Hoikkala, Ville (2020)Bacteria are in constant interaction with their viruses, bacteriophages (phages). To prevent or abort phage infections, a variety of defence mechanisms have evolved. CRISPR-Cas, the only known adaptive bacterial immune ... -
Aquaculture as a source of empirical evidence for coevolution between CRISPR-Cas and phage
Hoikkala, Ville; De Freitas Almeida, Gabriel; Laanto, Elina; Sundberg, Lotta-Riina (Royal Society, 2019)So far, studies on the bacterial immune system CRISPR-Cas and its ecological and evolutionary effects have been largely limited to laboratory conditions. While providing crucial information on the constituents of CRISPR-Cas, ... -
Cooperation between Different CRISPR-Cas Types Enables Adaptation in an RNA-Targeting System
Hoikkala, Ville; Ravantti, Janne; Díez-Villaseñor, César; Tiirola, Marja; Conrad, Rachel A.; McBride, Mark J.; Moineau, Sylvain; Sundberg, Lotta-Riina (American Society for Microbiology, 2021)CRISPR-Cas immune systems adapt to new threats by acquiring new spacers from invading nucleic acids such as phage genomes. However, some CRISPR-Cas loci lack genes necessary for spacer acquisition despite variation in ... -

Bacteriophage Adherence to Mucus Mediates Preventive Protection against Pathogenic Bacteria
Almeida, Gabriel M. F.; Laanto, Elina; Ashrafi, Roghaleh; Sundberg, Lotta-Riina (American Society for Microbiology, 2019)Metazoans were proposed to host bacteriophages on their mucosal surfaces in a symbiotic relationship, where phages provide an external immunity against bacterial infections and the metazoans provide phages a medium for ...
