A study of the helium-jet recoil-transport method and its application to on-line isotope separation
The helium-jet recoil-transport method and its coupling to the isotope separator on-line have been investigated. The dependence of the transport efficiency on several equipment parameters was studied both experimentally and theoretically. First, the transport efficiency of the He-jet method itself was studied. Pure commercial-grade helium, both at room temperature and at liquid nitrogen temperature, as well as carrier-loaded helium, was used. Efficiencies obtained with pure helium at room temperature were below 1 % when transport distances longer than one meter were used. Cooling of the helium down to liquid nitrogen temperature gave efficiencies of 10 - 50 % with several-meter transport distances. High transport efficiencies were also obtained when the helium was loaded with different carrier vapors. It was shown that additives have to form clusters with diameters from 0.01 - 1.0 μm for efficient transport of radioactivities. Next, a pure helium-jet at liquid nitrogen temperature coupled to a Nielsen type ion source, and a NaCl-loaded helium-jet coupled to a hollow cathode ion source, were investigated as means of connecting a cyclotron target chamber on-line to an isotope separator. Total separation efficiencies measured under various experimental conditions for several nuclides (Cu, In, Sn, Sb, Ba, Bi) were typically between 0.01 and 1.0 %.

(Institute of Physics Publishing Ltd., 2014)Neutron-rich isotopes of heavy nuclei are until now poorly studied. In this work we investigate neutron-rich osmium isotopes produced in multi-nucleon transfer reactions. The reaction 136Xe+208Pb at energy near Coulomb ... -

Herzáň, Andrej (University of Jyväskylä, 2015)Two experiments aiming to study the shape coexistence and competing structures in 193Bi and 195Bi isotopes have been performed at the Accelerator laboratory of the University of Jyv askyl a, Finland (JYFL). Many new ... -
Discovery of the new isotopes ²⁴⁰Es and ²³⁶Bk and in-beam spectroscopic studies of ²⁴⁴Cf
Konki, Joonas (University of Jyväskylä, 2017)The hitherto unknown neutron-deficient nuclei 240Es and 236Bk were synthesised using the fusion-evaporation reaction 209Bi(34S,3n)240Es. The ritu gas-filled recoil separator and the great spectrometer were used in this ... -
Minimum detection limits and applications of proton and helium induced X-ray emission using transition-edge sensor array
Käyhkö, Marko; Palosaari, M. R. J.; Laitinen, Mikko; Arstila, Kai; Maasilta, Ilari; Fowler, J. W.; Doriese, W. B.; Ullom, J. N.; Sajavaara, Timo (Elsevier B.V., 2017)We have determined minimum detection limits, MDLs, for elements 14 ≤ Z ≤ 86 using a transition-edge sensor array, TES array, and as a comparison using an Amptek X-123SDD silicon drift detector, SDD. This was done using ...
