Nykytaiteen museo Kiasman ARS17-näyttelyn verkkotaiteen kokoelma ARS17+ Online Art ja internet taiteen ympäristönä : ”Mitä tapahtuu taiteelle, kun se kohdataan museon sijaan netissä?”

Abstract

Tutkielmassa käsitellään Nykytaiteen museo Kiasman ARS17 Hello World! -näyttelyn yhteydessä lanseerattua verkkotaiteen kokoelmaa ARS17+ Online Art esimerkkinä siitä, miten museokokoelmiin voidaan hankkia internetissä toimivia taideteoksia ja millaisia ratkaisuja tällaisten verkkoteosten esittämisessä voidaan tehdä. Nykytaiteen kentällä toimivat taideinstituutiot ovat osoittaneet kasvavaa kiinnostusta internet-taiteeksi luokiteltaviin taiteen muotoihin, joten on muodostunut tarve alan käytäntöjen kartoitukselle. Internet- tai verkkotaiteella tutkimuksessa viitataan erilaisiin taiteen tekemisen tapoihin, jotka ovat tietoisia siitä verkon ympäristöstä, jossa ne toimivat. Tutkielman tavoitteena on koota yhteen verkkoteosten hankkimiseen, esittämiseen ja säilyttämiseen liittyviä haasteita, kysymyksiä ja mahdollisuuksia museokontekstissa sekä tarkastella internetin erityispiirteitä taiteen tekemisen, kokemisen ja esittämisen ympäristönä.

Tapaustutkimuksen kohdetta, ARS17+ Online Art -kokonaisuutta, tutkielmassa lähestytään monin eri menetelmin kerättyä aineistoa analysoiden. Keskeinen osa tutkimusta on teosaineiston analyysin, ARS17+ Online Art -sivuston tarkastelun ja sitä kuvaavien tekstien muodostama kuva tutkimuskohteesta. Verkkotaiteen kokoelman ja sen teosten taustalla olevia prosesseja tutkimuksessa lähestytään kuraattoreiden, museohenkilökunnan edustajien ja taiteilijoiden haastatteluiden kautta. Lisäksi Kiasman verkkotaiteen kokoelmaa verrataan aikaisemmassa tutkimuksessa tehtyihin havaintoihin sekä valittuihin esimerkkeihin muista verkkotaidealustoista.

Aineiston analyysin perusteella museon verkkotaidekokoelman kannalta keskeiset kysymykset liittyvät jatkuvan ylläpidon tarpeeseen ja teosten säilyttämiseen, sen taustalla vaikuttavaan yhteistyöhön ja monenlaisen osaamisen yhdistämiseen sekä verkkotaidealustan saavutettavuuteen ja yleisöjen tavoittamiseen. Internetissä toimiva taide haastaa taideinstituutioita kehittämään uusia taiteen esittämisen ja tallentamisen käytäntöjä. Internet hahmottuu tutkimuksessa ristiriitaisena avoimuuden ja kontrollin rakenteita yhdistävänä ja jatkuvasti muuttuvana taiteen ympäristönä, jonka suhde museoinstituution rakenteisiin on lähtökohtaisesti jännitteinen. Katkonainen kuva internet-taiteen historiasta tuo toisaalta esiin museoiden tallennustyön merkityksen sekä tarpeen myös nykyisiä internet-taiteen ilmiöitä kartoittavalle tutkimukselle.

ARS17+ Online Art, the web extension of Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma’s ARS17 exhibition and museum’s online art collection, and the internet as a space for art: “What happens when art is encountered not in a museum, but online?”

This thesis observes how museums can exhibit and collect works of online art. These questions are examined through one case, ARS17+ Online Art, the web extension of Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma’s ARS17 exhibition and museum’s online art collection. Contemporary art institutions have demonstrated a growing interest in artworks that can be experienced online. There is a need in the field to discuss current practices surrounding art on the internet. The term online or internet art can refer to divergent artistic practices operating on the net and artworks situated in networked environment. The aim of this study was, therefore, to highlight the key issues concerning ARS17+ Online Art, museum’s exhibition and collection of online art, and to identify characteristics of the internet as a space for making, experiencing and exhibiting art.

The subject of this case study, ARS17+ Online Art, is approached through various materials. The research is based on observations made about museum’s online exhibition platform and the analysis of the artworks. Interviews with curators and museum staff were conducted in order to better understand the context of Kiasma’s online art collection and the processes behind it. Information is also collected from museum’s materials and texts describing the project. Interviews with artists provide an insight into artistic practices and the role that internet plays in their works. ARS17+ Online Art is then compared to selected examples of other online art platforms and initiatives with similar objectives. This analysis also reflects observations made in previous studies.

The findings of this thesis indicate that the key issues regarding museum’s online art collection are connected to 1) continuity and maintenance, and how changes in the technological environment impact the preservation of the artworks; 2) the need for technical knowledge and multidisciplinary collaboration; and 3) accessibility and reach of the online art platform. Online artworks challenge the museum to develop new experimental exhibition strategies and methods of preservation. The internet is presented as a constantly mutating environment for art that can be described as both open and controlled. The relationship between this dynamic online environment and the existing structures in museum institutions can be seen as fundamentally challenging. The fragmented history of net-based art, however, brings a focus to the importance of preservation efforts and to the need for research gathering information on current phenomena of internet-based art.
