Suomessa metsälailla suojellut erityisen tärkeät elinympäristöt, eli metsälakikohteet, ovat yksi tapa suojella luonnon monimuotoisuutta talousmetsissä. On kuitenkin epäselvää, kuinka metsälakikohteita tulisi käytännössä käsitellä, jotta niiden ominaispiirteiden säilyminen voitaisiin turvata. Tämän tutkimuksen tavoitteena on selvittää suojavyöhykkeen ja poimintahakkuun vaikutuksia tuulenkaatojen määrään metsälain 10 §:ssä märitellyillä puronvarsilla. Tutkimuksessa oli mukana 37 puronvarsimetsää (leveys 15 m). Puronvarsimetsien viereen on tehty päätehakkuu vuonna 2006, lukuun ottamatta käsittelemättömiä kontrolleja.
Woodland key habitats represent one way of protecting biodiversity in production forests and some of them are protected by Finnish Forest Act. Habitats are set aside from the most intensive forest management and are protected with buffer zones. However, buffer zones are often narrow because of high costs to landowners and therefore are vulnerable to windthrows. Windthrows further increase the openness of the habitat and financial losses. The aim of this thesis is to disentangle the issue by estimating the effects of buffer zone and selective logging on windthrows on brook-side key habitats. The study was conducted on 37 brook-side habitats in Finland, where clear cuts have taken place in 2006, and some were left outside of management as control sites. Between the 15 meters wide brook-side and logged area, buffer zone of 15 meters or no buffer zone was left, and some of the brook-sides and buffer zones were selectively logged. Wind damages were estimated in autumn 2017 by counting windthrows. Brook-sides and buffer zones in adjacent to clear cuts had more windthrows than the control sites. However, brook-sides with buffer zones had less windthrows than brook-sides without, whether they were selectively logged or not. The number of windthrows increased when the direction of the clear cut approached south. Felling on the other side of the brook also increased the number of windthrows. This suggests, that 15 m buffer zones protect the brook-side habitats from windthrows, also when they are selectively logged. Forest management actions in surrounding landscape should be considered in buffer zone management. Especially on brook-sides with clear cuts facing south, the buffer zone should be left wide enough to prevent the risk of windthrows.en
