As the healthcare sector is constantly growing and changing, it is more important than ever to consider how we can ensure that a sufficient number of employees are available in healthcare organizations now and in the future. Social interactions play a key role when it comes to constructing, maintaining and developing organizations, workplaces, groups and teams that motivate people. Administrative groups, such as various management groups and staff meetings, have a significant impact on the performance of organizations and their employees. They create resources and develop and maintain the processes for the entire organization. The aim of this doctoral dissertation is to better understand administrative interaction and to define its characteristics in the hospital workplace. The goal is to analyze administrative interaction as a process that is constructed within the administrative groups at a hospital workplace. The study design is qualitative and includes four research articles: one literature review and three empirical research reports. The theoretical background of the study leans on the perspectives of the institutional theory of organizational communication. The empirical data of the study consists of fifteen observations of administrative group meetings and nine interviews of nursing staff members. The data analysis utilized qualitative methods, such as qualitative content analysis. The findings of the study indicate that administrative interaction is comprised of processes in which 1) the resources for work and 2) the communal aspects of work are created and maintained. The processes that construct the resources for work and the communal aspects of work include: 1) managing information, 2) managing action, 3) managing workplace and 4) managing responsibility. To conclude, the processes that pierce the different dimensions of administrative interaction in a hospital workplace seem to involve the management of the communal aspects of work, the management of responsibilities and the management of the institution. The findings of the study can be applied to the development of specific processes for groups, workplaces and organizations.
