OpenVPN-suorituskyky pfSense-reititystä käytettäessä -tutkimus keskittyy analysoimaan OpenVPN-protokollan suorituskykyä käytettäessä pfSense-reitittimeen kuuluvaa OpenVPN-ohjelmistopakettia ja AMD64-arkkitehtuuriin perustuvaa reititinlaitteistoa. OpenVPN on yleisesti käytetty VPN-protokolla, mutta tuki reitittimessä toimiville, keskitetyille OpenVPN-ratkaisuille on edelleen melko vähäistä, kuin myös tutkimustiedot toimivuuden ja suorituskyvyn osalta laajalla laitteistokirjolla. Tutkimuksessa asennetaan pfSense-käyttöjärjestelmä ja OpenVPN -ohjelmisto tarkoitusta varten kootulle reitittimelle, ja mitataan järjestelmän suorituskykyä tyypillisen pk-yrityksen käyttötapausta vastaavassa koeasetelmassa Gigabit Ethernet -standardin mukaisessa verkossa. Tutkimustuloksena voidaan esittää, että pfSense/OpenVPN/AMD64 -kokoonpano on havaituista ongelmista huolimatta esitetyssä käyttötapauksessa toimiva ja suhteellisen suorituskykyinen ratkaisu myös vahvaa liikenteen salausta käytettäessä.
 
OpenVPN performance in pfSense router Master’s Thesis focuses on analyzing OpenVPN protocol performance metrics when used with pfSense router OpenVPN package and AMD64-based router hardware. OpenVPN is a common VPN protocol but its support for dedicated router implementation and research on performance metrics in such use on broad array of hardware configurations has been rather limited. In this thesis pfSense operating system and OpenVPN software packages are installed on a custom-built router and performance tests are run in test setup that closely resembles typical use case of small enterprise setup in Gigabit Ethernet network. The main conclusion is that the pfSense/OpenVPN/AMD64 system has some flaws but is usable in presented use case and offers relatively high level of performance even when used with strong encryption.
