Determination of the fission half-life for the isotope 250No
My Master Thesis is titled “Determination of the fission half-life for the
isotope 250No”. The data I analyse in this work were collected in an experiment
run in April, 2015, at the accelerator laboratory of the University of Jyväskylä.
The Physics motivation for the experiment is explained in my thesis, as well as
the involved theoretical background.
This isotope was previously proven to decay via spontaneous fission. Also an
isomeric state was found. The question I give an answer to in my work is
whether the isomeric state fissions directly or it gamma-decays to the ground
state, which then fissions itself. Besides both half-lives (for the ground state and
the isomeric state) were calculated.
The data acquisition was performed both with analogic and digital channels,
allowing to extrapolate decay digital traces. Given that two different half-life
components are present, a shorter one for the ground state and a longer one for
the isomeric state, I utilized a K.H.Schmidt analysis to separate the two
components. The traces for the short component were instead analysed with a
moving window deconvolution method.
I found new and very interesting results, with great satisfaction of myself and my
supervisor, who would like to publish them afterwards.

Nuclear fission studies with the IGISOL method and JYFLTRAP
Gorelov, Dmitry (University of Jyväskylä, 2015)there is no unique model or theory which describes all aspects of this phenomenon. Experimental measurements of nuclear fission product distributions still remains quite a challenging task for modern technologies. In ... -
Thorium-232 protoni-indusoidun fission tuottojakauma
Korkiamäki, Rami (2024)In this thesis we studied how the fission yields of thorium-232 proton-induced fission vary with different elements depending on how the fission products are mass separated and which method is used to determine the fission ... -

(American Physical Society (APS), 2020)The electron-capture decay followed by a prompt fission process was searched for in the hitherto unknown most neutron-deficient Md isotope with mass number 244. Alpha decay with α-particle energies of 8.73–8.86 MeV and ... -
Simulated eutrophication and browning alters zooplankton nutritional quality and determines juvenile fish growth and survival
Taipale, Sami; Kahilainen, Kimmo Kalevi; Holtgrieve, Gordon William; Peltomaa, Elina Talvikki (Blackwell Publishing Ltd, 2018)The first few months of life is the most vulnerable period for fish and their optimal hatching time with zooplankton prey is favored by natural selection. Traditionally, however, prey abundance (i.e., zooplankton density) ...
