| dc.description.abstract | Tässä tutkimuksessa selvitettiin, millaisia strategioita Counter-Strike: Global Offensive -videopeliin keskittyvällä keskustelufoorumilla käytetään epäkohteliaisuuden ilmaisemiseksi. Tutkimus toteutettiin ankkuroidun teorian periaatteita mukaillen. Tutkimuksen tarkoitus oli luoda aineistoa uskollisesti kuvaava luokittelu, kiinnittäen samalla huomiota multimodaalisiin ilmiöihin. Osaltaan pohdittiin myös sitä, tulisiko tutkimuskohteena ollutta foorumia tarkastella yhteisönä (Community of Practice) vai tilana (Affinity Space). Keskeisenä lähteenä epäkohteliaisuuden analyysissä toimi Bousfield (2008), jonka luokitteluun tuloksia verrattiin.
Analyysin lopputuloksena oli kymmenen epäkohteliaisuusstrategian luokittelu. Foorumin käyttäjät pyrkivät strategioita käyttäen hyökkäämään muita henkilöitä sekä heidän mielipiteitään vastaan. Samalla strategioiden käytöllä on kuitenkin keskeinen rooli käyttäjien yrityksissä muokata, luoda ja määritellä foorumin käytänteitä, ryhmiä, voimasuhteita sekä yleisesti hyväksyttyjä mielipiteitä sekä sallittuja puheenaiheita. Multimodaaliset välineet olivat hieman yllättäen sivuosassa, viitaten niiden mahdollisesti olevan positiivisen ja/tai rakentavan keskustelun piirre. Käyttäjien keskittyessä toisen vääräksi osoittamiseen sekä leimaamiseen varsinaista keskustelua asiasta ei pääse syntymään, ja osanottajat jakautuvat jyrkästi leireihin, joiden väliin keskustelijat eivät mahdu tai tahdo mahtua. | fi |
| dc.description.abstract | This study examined impoliteness strategies utilized by users of an online discussion forum focused on the video game Counter-Strike: Global Offensive. The study made use of the Grounded Theory method, with the aim to create a categorization that describes the data as closely as possible. At the same time, multimodal tools were given special attention. In part, the study also addressed the question as to whether the forum should be regarded as a Community of Practice or an Affinity Space. The work of Bousfield (2008) acted as an important frame of reference, as the emerging categories were compared with Bousfield's findings.
The analysis yielded a framework of ten impoliteness strategies. The users of the forum utilized impoliteness strategies to attack both persons and opinions. At the same time, the strategies served as tools to define, create and redefine the practices, group identities, power relations as well as commonly accepted opinions and allowed topics. Rather surprisingly, the role of multimodal tools was small, possibly pointing towards the interpretation that multimodality is primarily a feature of positive and/or supportive interaction. As the users focus on pointing out faults in each other's reasoning, as well as on stigmatizing and grouping the other, the discussion remains a superficial shouting match. The rift between the groups is deep, and little ground exists between the two extremes. | en |
