Abstract

VANHUS KOTONA OMAISHOIDON TURVIN Omaishoidettavan kokemuksia kodista, hoivasta ja rooleista

Tässä tutkimuksessa tutkitaan omaishoitoa omaishoidettavan näkökulmasta ja tarkemmin heidän kokemuksiaan kodista, hoivasta ja rooleista. Tutkimus on tärkeä siksi, että omaishoitajuutta on tutkittu paljon omaishoitajan, mutta ei juurikaan omaishoidettavan näkökulmasta. Tutkimuksen aineisto kerättiin teemahaastattelun avulla haastattelemalla seitsemää Alavuden kaupungissa asuvaa omaishoidontuen saajaa. Haastattelut litteroitiin ja analysoitiin aineistolähtöisesti.

Tutkimustulosten perusteella voidaan nähdä, että kotona oleminen yhdessä läheisen kanssa on vanhukselle tärkeää. Koti nähdään yhteiselon paikkana. Kodin fyysistä sijaintia ei pidetä merkityksellisenä, vaan koti syntyy autonomisuuden ja pärjäämisen tunteesta sekä läheisistä ihmisistä ja tutuista tavaroista. Tutkimukseen haastatellut vanhukset kokivat omaishoidossa saadun hoivan riittäväksi. Omaishoidettavat toivat haastatteluissa esille, etteivät he halua olla taakaksi omaisilleen. Tästä syystä jokainen haastateltavista koki omaishoidon onnistuvan kotona niin kauan kun omaa toimintakykyä on jäljellä. Tutkimustulosten perusteella omaishoitotilanteella ei ole vaikutusta perheen sisäisiin rooleihin. Omaishoidettavat kokivat, ettei hoitotilanne muuttanut totuttuja tapoja tai arjen toimintoja. Kuitenkin kaksi haastatteluun osallistunutta naista, joiden puoliso toimi omaishoitajana, toivat esille parisuhteen muuttuneen pelkäksi hoiva- ja kaverisuhteeksi. Omaishoidettavien antamat merkitykset kodista, hoivasta ja roolista voidaan tiivistää kolmeen pääluokkaan: koti yhteiselon paikkana, toimintakyky hoivan tarpeen määrittäjänä sekä roolien pysyminen muuttumattomina.

Tutkimuksessa omaishoidettavat antoivat positiivisia merkityksiä omaishoidosta sekä yhteisestä elämästä läheisten kanssa. Tulokset asettavat haasteita yhteiskunnalle. Tulevaisuudessa tulee kiinnittää huomioita omaishoitotilanteiden yksilöllisyyteen tukipalveluja järjestettäessä sekä rakentaa lisää palveluasuntoja, jotka mahdollistavat pariskunnan yhteiselon elämään loppuun saakka. Myös omaishoidettaviin kohdistuvaa tutkimusta tarvitaan lisää.

ELDERLY PEOPLE AT HOME IN CARE OF CLOSE RELATIVES Care recipients' experiences of home, the care and the roles

In this thesis, informal care was studied from the care recipients' point of view. Special attention was paid on their perceptions of home, the care and the roles in their relationships. The study is important, because so far informal care has been predominantly studied from caregivers' perspective. Data was collected by interviewing seven informal care recipients living in Alavus. The interviews were transcribed and analyzed by using inductive content analysis.

The findings showed that living at home with relatives was important to the elderly people. Home was percieved as a place of everyday living. The physical location of home was not considered significant, whereas the feeling of autonomy, the close relationships and the familiar things were regarded as important. The interviewees thought that informal care was adequate. However, they brought up that they did not want to be a burden to their close relatives. For this reason, every one of the interviewees felt that the care at home could be continued as long as their own ability to function was not substantially impared. On the basis of the research, it can be stated that informal care does not have an effect on the roles inside the family. However, two women interviewees who were cared of by their spouses brought up that their marriage relationships had changed into mere friendships and care relationships. Furthermore, the care recipients experienced that the habits and the daily routines at home had not changed in any way. To conclude, the care recipients' experiences could be summarized as follows: home was percieved as a place of everyday living, the care at home could be adjusted to the functional abilities of the care recipient and finally the roles in the majority of these relationships had remained unchanged.

According to the research, the care recipients regarded both informal care and life with close relatives as very important. Therefore, arranging caring services is going to be a major challenge to society: more attention has to be paid on the individuality of informal care and more old people's homes have to be built to enable couples to live together until the end. Nevertheless, further and more comprehensive research on the experiences and life of care recipients is required.
