Internet of Things is a paradigm referring to the pervasive presence of networked
things and objects that are able to interact and cooperate with each other.
This paradigm also suggests that in the future these objects also produce
large amounts of data to the internet and other network applications. Predictions
say that the amount of data produced by things proceeds human produced
data in the near future. These visions are grounded in the assumption
that the advances in microelectronics, communications and information technology
added with diminishing prices of these technologies will bring networking
and cooperation capabilities to more and more every day things.
This thesis reviews what the Internet of Things means as a phenomenon, how
standards form in this field and challenges for Internet of Things standardization.
Since IoT is a global phenomenon standardization plays a key role in the
development of IoT. For this reason this thesis focuses to the standardization
activities and not only to introducing technologies associated with IoT. First
two chapters deal with the phenomenon and technology. But chapters three
and four focus on challenges on IoT standardization and some of the IoT standards
that already exist.

Langattomien sensoriverkkoteknologioiden soveltaminen älykodissa : muistisairaan paikantaminen
Silvennoinen, Mika (2019)Työssä esitellään älykotiratkaisuja lähinnä terveydenhuollon näkökulmasta. Lisäksi läpikäydään älykotien langattomaan tiedonsiirtoon liittyviä teknologioita. Empiirisessä osuudessa selvitetään muistisairaan vanhuksen ... -
UAV-Aided Secure Short-Packet Data Collection and Transmission
Chen, Xinying; Zhao, Nan; Chang, Zheng; Hämäläinen, Timo; Wang, Xianbin (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), 2023)Benefiting from the deployment flexibility and the line-of-sight (LoS) channel conditions, unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) has gained tremendous attention in data collection for wireless sensor networks. However, the ... -
LoRa-Based Sensor Node Energy Consumption with Data Compression
Väänänen, Olli; Hämäläinen, Timo (IEEE, 2021)In this paper simple temporal compression algorithms' efficiency to reduce LoRa-based sensor node energy consumption has been evaluated and measured. It is known that radio transmission is the most energy consuming operation ... -
Wireless Strain Gauge Network : Best-Hall Measurement Case
Hongell, Timo; Kivelä, Ilkka; Hakala, Ismo (IEEE, 2014)Wireless sensor networks can be used to perform structural monitoring. Strain gauges, which can be glued on or integrated to the observed material, are the most common nondestructive sensing elements for measuring surface ... -
Sensor placement in water distribution networks using centrality-guided multi-objective optimisation
Diao, Kegong; Emmerich, Michael; Lan, Jacob; Yevseyeva, Iryna; Sitzenfrei, Robert (IWA Publishing, 2024)This paper introduces a multi-objective optimisation approach for the challenging problem of efficient sensor placement in water distribution networks for contamination detection. An important question is, how to identify ...
