Harmony wants to sit in the front - Different Brain Responses to Violations in Chord Progressions
Authors
Date
2009Deviations from auditory regularities elicit electric potentials distributed over the frontal regions of the scalp. The mismatch negativity (MMN) is elicited by change in repetitive auditory input, whereas the early right anterior negativity (ERAN) is elicited when sounds deviate from a hierarchically organized musical regularity. In this study we wished to disentangle the functional roles of these two brain processes associated with the detection of sequential vs. hierarchical musical violations by studying the localization of their neural generators. Subjects listened to musical cadences constituted by seven chords, each containing either harmonically congruous chords, harmonically incongruous chords (Neapolitan subdominant), or harmonically congruous but mistuned chords (5th raised 50 cents). Electroencephalography (EEG) was recorded and source analysis was performed. Incongruous chords violating the rules of harmony elicited a bilateral ERAN, whereas mistuned chords within chord sequences elicited a right-lateralized MMN. We found that the dominant neural sources for the ERAN were localized in Broca’s area and its right homologue, whereas the MMN generators were localized in auditory cortex. These findings demonstrate the predominant role of the auditory cortices in detecting sequential scale regularities and of the prefrontal cortex in parsing hierarchical regularities in music.

Single-trial-based temporal principal component analysis on extracting event-related potentials of interest for an individual subject
Zhang, Guanghui; Li, Xueyan; Lu, Yingzhi; Tiihonen, Timo; Chang, Zheng; Cong, Fengyu (Elsevier, 2023)Background: Temporal principal component analysis (tPCA) has been widely used to extract event-related potentials (ERPs) at group level of multiple subjects ERP data and it assumes that the underlying factor loading is ... -
Event-related potentials to tones show differences between children with multiple risk factors for dyslexia and control children before the onset of formal reading instruction
Hämäläinen, Jarmo; Lohvansuu, Kaisa; Ervast, Leena; Leppänen, Paavo H.T. (Elsevier BV; International Organization of Psychophysiology, 2015)Multiple risk factors can affect the development of specific reading problems or dyslexia. In addition to the most prevalent and studied risk factor, phonological processing, also auditory discrimination problems have ... -

Responsivity to dyslexia training indexed by the N170 amplitude of the brain potential elicited by word reading
Gonzáles, G. Fraga; Žarić, G.; Tijms, J.; Bonte, M.; Blomert, L.; Leppänen, Paavo H.T.; van der Molen, M. W. (Academic Press, 2016)The present study examined training effects in dyslexic children on reading fluency and the amplitude of N170, a negative brain-potential component elicited by letter and symbol strings. A group of 18 children with ...
