| dc.description.abstract | Turo Uskalin väitöstutkimuksen mukaan Moskovan-kirjeenvaihtajat ovat olleet tärkeimpiä Neuvostoliittokuvan välittäjiä. Tähän vaikutti kirjeenvaihtajien taito lukea rivien väleistä ja kirjoittaa rivien väleihin, sekä se, että osa heistä teki työtään Moskovan-kirjeenvaihtajien kultakauden 1962-1966 aikana, jolloin neuvostolehdistö kritisoi monia yhteiskuntansa epäkohtia. Uskali tutki väitöskirjassaan Kansan Uutisten, Uuden Suomen, Yleisradion, Suomen Tietotoimiston (yhteispohjoismainen), Helsingin Sanomien ja Tiedonantajan Moskovan-kirjeenvaihtajuuksien alkutaipaleet. | dc.description.abstract | The demand for self-censorship was already expressed by the editor-in-chief to the first correspondents of the conservative daily Uusi Suomi: the advice "do not write yourself out" was repeatedly emphasized. The theme of this study is the history of the first Finnish correspondents in Moscow, 1957-1975. Its main focus is on empirical findings, but at the same time it has the ambition to develop research methods and theoretical models for research into sensitive subjects in general and journalism history in particular. The empirical data consists of journalistic texts, interviews and contemporary material from different archives. Journalistic texts were analyzed both quantitatively and qualitatively (in all about 2000 news stories from six different media). Thirteen in-depth interviews (lasting about three hours), and nine other interviews were conducted. Documents from twelve Finnish public archives and seven private archives were examined. In the period 1957-1975, 17 Finnish correspondents working for six different media were stationed in Moscow, starting in chronological order: the communist daily Kansan Uutiset 1957, the conservative daily Uusi Suomi 1958, the Finnish Broadcasting Company (Yleisradio, YLE) 1965, the Finnish News Agency (STT, FNB) 1966, the liberal daily Helsingin Sanomat 1975, and the hard-line communist daily Tiedonantaja 1975. From the point of view of correspondency there are three especially notable sub-periods: 1) the pioneer era (1957?62), 2) the years of growing competition (1965?66), and 3) the effects of the Conference on Security and Cooperation in Europe (CSCE) (1975).
