Lapin yliopiston taiteiden tiedekunta 2020 : poikkeusvuoden vaikutus akateemiseen opintomenestykseen ja opiskelijavalintaan

Abstract

Yliopistot ympäri maailmaa siirtyivät etäopiskeluun ja hakijoiden etävalintaan koronapandemian sulkiessa yhteiskuntaa keväällä 2020. Etävalintakokeen ennustettavuudesta tulevaan opintomenestykseen ei ole tutkittua tietoa. Tämän pro gradu -tutkielman tarkoituksena on täyttää tätä aukkoa vertaamalla etävalintakoetta perinteiseen valintakokeeseen menetelmänä saada samankaltaisia opiskelijoita yliopistoon. Koronapandemiasta johtuen opintoja suoritettiin poikkeuksellisessa tilanteessa ja tämän vuoksi tutkielmassa tarkasteltiin kahden valintaryhmän eroavaisuutta. Ensimmäinen ryhmä valikoitui perinteisellä valintakokeella ja aloitti opintonsa lähiopetuksessa. Toinen ryhmä tuli valituksi etävalintakokeella ja koronapandemiasta johtuen suoritti opintoja etänä. Ryhmien eroavaisuuksia tulee ensisijaisesti pitää koronapandemian seurauksina. Tutkielmassa tarkasteltiin myös, voidaanko valintakokeella yleensäkään ennustaa tulevaa opintomenestystä. Lisäksi selvitettiin, voidaanko etävalintakokeen avulla saada maantieteellisesti laajemmalta alueelta hakijoita taiteiden tiedekuntaan.

Valintaryhmien eroavaisuuksia tarkasteltiin keskimääräisten lukujen ja korrelaation avulla. Vuoden mittausjaksolla perinteisesti aloittanut ryhmä saavutti enemmän opintopisteitä ja saavutti paremmat arvosanat. Valintaryhmien sukupuolijakaumassa eikä ikärakenteessa tapahtunut merkittäviä muutoksia. Valintakokeiden pisteet eivät korreloituneet kummassakaan valintaryhmässä suoritettuihin opintopisteisiin. Etävalintakokeen pisteet korreloituivat kurssien arvosanoihin tilastollisesti melkein merkittävästi.

Tutkimus osoitti, että koronapandemia vaikutti opiskelijoiden opintosuorituksiin, mutta ensimmäisen vuoden pohjalta havaittiin aineistosta, että korkeakoulu, opettajat, sekä oppilaat kehittyivät toimimaan poikkeuksellisissa olosuhteissa.

Universities around the world were switched to distance learning and the distance selection of applicants in corona pandemic shut down society in the spring 2020. There is no investigated information about the predictability of the distance entrance examination. The purpose of this master’s thesis is to fill this gap by comparing the distance entrance exam to the traditional entrance exam as a method of getting similar students to university. Due to the coronary pandemic, studies were conducted in an exceptional situation and therefore the thesis examined the differences in the two selection groups. The first group was selected by a traditional selection exam and started their studies in contact teaching. The second group was selected by distance selection exam and, due to the corona pandemic, studied distance. The differences between the groups should be seen primarily as a consequence of the corona pandemic. The thesis also examined whether the entrance examination can generally be used to predict future academic success. In addition, it was investigated whether the distance selection exam could be used to attract applicants from a wider geographical area to the Faculty of Arts.

The differences between the selection groups were examined using mean numbers and correlation. The group, which traditionally started during the measurement period of the year, scored more credits and achieved better grades. There were no significant changes in the gender distribution of the selection groups or in the age structure. The scores on the entrance exams did not correlate with the credits completed in either selection group. The scores of the distance entrance examination were statistically almost significantly correlated with the grades of the courses.

The study showed that the corona pandemic affected students academic performance, but based on the first year, it was found from the data that the college, teachers, and students developed to operate in exceptional circumstances.
