Trophic ecology of piscivorous Arctic charr (Salvelinus alpinus (L.)) in subarctic lakes with contrasting food-web structures
Kahilainen, K. K., Thomas, S. M., Harrod, C.; Hayden, B.; Eloranta, A. P. (Springer, 2019)The trophic ecology of piscivorous Arctic charr (Salvelinus alpinus (L.); charr) in the food webs of large subarctic lakes is not well understood. We assessed charr diets, parasites, growth, maturity, and stable isotope ... -
Competition for resources is ameliorated by niche differentiation between Solidago virgaurea life-history stages in the Arctic
Savolainen, Tiina; Kytöviita, Minna-Maarit (Oxford University Press; Botanical Society of China, 2017)Aims Competition has been shown to modify the niche breadth of coexisting species, but within-species interactions have received little attention. Establishing small juvenile individuals and established, larger, sexually ... -
Species interactions, environmental gradients and body size shape population niche width
Eloranta, Antti P.; Finstad, Anders G.; Sandlund, Odd Terje; Knudsen, Rune; Kuparinen, Anna; Amundsen, Per‐Arne (Wiley-Blackwell, 2022)Competition for shared resources is commonly assumed to restrict population-level niche width of coexisting species. However, the identity and abundance of coexisting species, the prevailing environmental conditions, and ... -
The relationships of plant species occupancy to niches and traits vary with spatial scale
Mod, Heidi K.; Rissanen, Tuuli; Niittynen, Pekka; Soininen, Janne; Luoto, Miska (Wiley-Blackwell, 2023)Aim Support for different underlying mechanisms of species occupancy is inconsistent, yet this could be related to spatial scale. Since abiotic filtering typically acts at broader scales than biotic interactions, we ...
