Pollution is one of the leading direct drivers of biodiversity loss. Plastic pollution can take various forms. Globally, pollution from plastics has been found to have harmful impacts on biodiversity and ecosystem functions and services. Plastic pollution in the Arctic is not just a local issue but a global environmental problem because it accumulates across terrestrial, freshwater, and marine ecosystems. Plastic pollution is affecting Arctic biodiversity such as fish populations, which are essential to human livelihoods. Microplastics enter food chains and circulate in the inland waters, seas, and atmosphere. All Nordic countries must play a part in combating this critical pollution, which significantly impacts Nordic biodiversity.
