The COVID-19 pandemic has led to a major downturn in the aviation industry that has not only affected international flights but also domestic aviation. Airlines have adjusted their timetables accordingly, but load factors have remained low. This has resulted in a loss of profitability and a large increase of greenhouse gas emissions of individual air passengers. In order to prevent airlines from closing routes, governments have provided subsidies. However, these subsidies are in sharp contrast with the climate goals of many countries. This study explores the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on the domestic aviation sector in Finland based on actual passenger and landing data. It takes the changes in environmental impacts resulting from the demand shift cause by the pandemic into account. In addition, this study considers the replacement of existing aircraft with those powered electrically, in order to address the significant drop in demand due to the COVID-19 pandemic and provide an alternative for a green recovery from the pandemic. Finally, based on our findings we provide a series of policy recommendations.

Emissions reduction potentials in business aviation with electric aircraft
Baumeister, Stefan; Krstić, Simić Tatjana; Ganić, Emir (Elsevier, 2024)Under the looming climate crisis, public concerns have been raised regarding the environmental impacts of private jet flights. Electric aircraft are currently considered one of the most encouraging technological keys to ... -
The emission reduction potentials of First Generation Electric Aircraft (FGEA) in Finland
Baumeister, Stefan; Leung, Abraham; Ryley, Tim (Elsevier, 2020)Under the looming climate crisis, aviation needs to find new solutions to cut its greenhouse gas emissions. One pathway towards zero emissions is the use of electric aircraft. While current battery technology will not allow ... -
An eco-label for the airline industry : instrument for behavioral change?
Baumeister, Stefan (University of Jyväskylä, 2017)Climate change is the biggest challenge humanity has ever faced and there is no doubt that human activities are the main cause. One activity that has received much attention in this discussion is air transportation. ... -
Climate Change Mitigation Potentials of Carbon Labels in the Aviation Industry
Baumeister, Stefan (Nova Science Publishers, 2018)This chapter discusses the climate change mitigation potentials of carbon labels in the aviation industry. As this study shows, there are significant differences in the environmental performance of individual flights, ... -
The emissions reduction potential of substituting short-haul flights with non-high-speed rail (NHSR) : The case of Finland
Baumeister, Stefan; Leung, Abraham (Elsevier, 2021)Replacing short-haul flights with high-speed rail (HSR) has been widely discussed as one solution to mitigate the climate change impacts of aviation. However, although HSR can provide travel times similar to those provided ...
