This data includes all used research data published in Limnology and Oceanography doi: 10.1002/lno.12973, including pigments and fatty acid concentration over three seasons in Lake Kariba at Sanyati Basin in 2022. Moreover, data includes microbial communities using 16SRNA and 23SRNA. Data also include fatty acid profiles and stable isotopes of food web components in Lake Kariba. Moreover, data include relative gene activity of fads2 and elolv5 genes from fish liver.

Eutrophication effect on production and transfer of omega-3 fatty acids in boreal lake food webs (Dataset)
Peltomaa, Elina; Calderini, Marco; Piro, Alex.; Ruunijärvi, Jukka; Rigaud, Cyril; Salmi, Pauliina; Estlander, Satu; Vuorio, Kristiina; Taipale, Sami; Kahilainen, Kimmo (2023)The dataset consists of lake 12 Finnish lakes food web (phytoplankton, zooplankton, and fish) across a nutrient gradient (total phosphorus and total nitrogen). Data corresponds to biomass and community composition, ... -
Lake browning impacts community structure and essential fatty acid content of littoral invertebrates in boreal lakes
Kesti, Petri; Hiltunen, Minna; Strandberg, Ursula; Vesterinen, Jussi; Taipale, Sami; Kankaala, Paula (Springer, 2022)Many lakes in the northern hemisphere are browning due to increasing concentrations of terrestrial dissolved organic carbon (DOC). The consequences of lake browning to littoral invertebrates, however, are not fully understood. ... -
Periphyton as a key diet source of essential fatty acids for macroinvertebrates across a nutrient and dissolved organic carbon gradient in boreal lakes
Vesterinen, Jussi; Strandberg, Ursula; Taipale, Sami J.; Kainz, Martin J.; Kankaala, Paula (Wiley; Association for the Sciences of Limnology and Oceanography, 2022)We studied how physiologically important long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) in benthic macroinvertebrates (Asellus aquaticus, Chironomidae, and Oligochaeta) were related to those in periphyton and terrestrial ... -
Herbivorous cladoceran essential fatty acid and cholesterol content across a phosphorous and DOC gradients of boreal lakes : Importance of diet selection
Keva, Ossi; Litmanen, Jaakko J.; Kahilainen, Kimmo K.; Strandberg, Ursula; Kiljunen, Mikko; Hämäläinen, Heikki; Taipale, Sami J. (Wiley, 2023)1. Eutrophication has been shown to increase production of nutritionally low-quality cyanobacteria and decrease the long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) content of seston. Contrarily, lake browning inhibits ... -
Eutrophication effect on production and transfer of omega-3 fatty acids in boreal lake food webs
Calderini, Marco L.; Kahilainen, Kimmo K.; Estlander, Satu; Peltomaa, Elina; Piro, Alexander J.; Rigaud, Cyril; Ruuhijärvi, Jukka; Salmi, Pauliina; Vesterinen, Jussi; Vuorio, Kristiina; Taipale, Sami J. (Elsevier, 2023)Eutrophication, i.e. increasing level of nutrients and primary production, is a central environmental change of lakes globally with wide effects on food webs. However, how eutrophication affects the synthesis of physiologically ...
