The most authoritative publication about the folk music of Eastern Khanty till now is Wogulische und ostjakische Melodien, published by A. O. Väisänen (Helsinki, 1937). It contains 52 Eastern Khanty melodies. The newly collected material added a lot to our knowledge about this music. In this study I have treated mostly Eastern Khanty melodies: most of the songs that I have recorded in Siberia; the majority of the melodies recorded by Karjalainen, notated and published by Väisänen; and 25 melodies from the collection of Jarkko Niemi, ethnomusicologist, researcher in Tampere University. My most important purpose has been to get to know the regularities under the surface of Eastern Khanty songs, the way of composing the text and melody of these melodies. After a short survey of the history of studying their music, and introduction of the topics of this writing, we can read about the methods of collecting, notating and analysing, about the musical system of Eastern Khanty songs, and their characteristics. This musical culture is a disappearing part of the cultural heritage of the world, and a possible means of keeping identity for the Khanty. Therefore its research is very important, and definitely not finished.en
