Azobenzene macrocycles are widely investigated as potential drug delivery systems and as part of molecular machines due to their photo-responsive properties. Herein, we detect the formation of a series of new azobenzene macrocycles that feature up to eight switchable repeating units. High-resolution mass spectrometry and ion mobility (IM) mass spectrometry experiments and 1H and diffusion-ordered spectroscopy (DOSY) NMR are used to detect the presence of the macrocycles that contain 10 to 40 aromatic rings in the gas phase and solution, respectively. The responsiveness of the Z-to-E photo-switching of the smallest of the macrocycles, exhibiting 2 azobenzene units and in total 10 aromatic rings, separated with column chromatography, is studied with irradiation experiments, using both UV-Vis light and thermal excitation and relaxation, and monitoring the sample with UV-Vis absorption and 1H NMR spectroscopy. DFT calculations are used to understand the conformation of this isolated species in solution.

R.; Wang, Q.; Wessolek, J.; Yang, X. F.; Zülch, C. (Nature Publishing Group, 2024)Molecules containing heavy radioactive nuclei are predicted to be extremely sensitive to violations of the fundamental symmetries of nature. The nuclear octupole deformation of certain radium isotopes massively boosts the ... -
A zero-field single-molecule magnet with luminescence thermometry capabilities containing soft donors
Marin, Riccardo; Alves Gálico, Diogo; Gayfullina, Rezeda; Moilanen, Jani O.; Carlos, Luís D.; Jaque, Daniel; Murugesu, Muralee (Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC), 2022)Simultaneous fine-tune of magnetic and optical properties in lanthanide single-molecule magnets (SMMs) is a daunting task. Even more so when additional functionalities, like luminescence thermometry, are sought after. ... -

Anion-driven encapsulation of cationic guests inside pyridine[4]arene dimers
Kiesilä, Anniina; Moilanen, Jani O.; Kruve, Anneli.; Schalley, Christoph A.; Barran, Perdita; Kalenius, Elina (Beilstein Institut zur Foerderung der Chemischen Wissenschaften, 2019)Pyridine[4]arenes have previously been considered as anion binding hosts due to the electron-poor nature of the pyridine ring. Herein, we demonstrate the encapsulation of Me4N+ cations inside a dimeric hydrogen-bonded ... -
The Biosynthesis of Rare Homo-Amino Acid Containing Variants of Microcystin by a Benthic Cyanobacterium
Shishido, Tânia Keiko; Jokela, Jouni; Humisto, Anu; Suurnäkki, Suvi; Wahlsten, Matti; Alvarenga, Danillo O.; Sivonen, Kaarina; Fewer, David P. (MDPI AG, 2019)Microcystins are a family of chemically diverse hepatotoxins produced by distantly related cyanobacteria and are potent inhibitors of eukaryotic protein phosphatases 1 and 2A. Here we provide evidence for the biosynthesis ...
