Pilvipohjaisten tietovarastojen hyödyt yrityksille

Tietovarastot ovat olleet yrityksillä käytössä jo vuosikymmeniä. Lähivuosina teknologian kehittymisen myötä tiedon määrä on kasvanut räjähdysmäisesti, eivätkä perinteiset tietovarastot ole suunniteltu kestämään yhä suurempia määriä dataa. Pilviteknologian kehittymisen myötä ne tarjoavat uusia ratkaisuja yhä useammalle osa-alueelle. Yksi näistä on tietovarastot. Pilvipalveluiden lähes rajattoman tallennustilan ja laskentatehon avulla yritykset voivat siirtää tietovarastonsa pilveen ja saavuttaa siten suuria hyötyjä. Tämän tutkielman tarkoituksena oli selvittää tarkemmin mitä hyötyjä yritykset voivat saada, jos he vaihtavat perinteisestä tietovarastosta pilvipohjaiseen tietovarastoon. Tutkielman tutkimuskysymyksenä on: Mitä hyötyjä yrityksen voivat saada siirtäessään tietovarastonsa pilveen?”. Tutkielma toteutettiin ensin tekemällä kirjallisuuskatsaus aiheesta, jonka jälkeen havainnot todennettiin empiirisen osion avulla. Tutkielman empiirinen osio tehtiin laadullisena tutkimuksena ja tiedon keruu dokumenttianalyysin keinoin. Dokumenttianalyysissä aineistona käytettiin pilvipalveluiden toimittajien ja niiden käyttäjien verkkosivuja, sekä blogeja ja aiheeseen liittyviä videoita. Tutkimuksen tarkoituksena oli yhdistää kirjallisuuden avulla luotu viitekehys pilvipohjaisten tietovarastojen hyödyistä käytännöllisemmälle tasolle. Tutkimuksen tuloksina olivat, että pilvipohjaiset tietovarastot tuovat yrityksille hyötyjä muun muassa kustannuksissa, skaalautuvuudessa ja ajassa, mutta on myös muita suurempia tekijöitä, jotka yritysten täytyy pitää mielessä vaihtaessaan tietovarastonsa perinteisestä ratkaisusta pilveen. Nämä asiat ovat muun muassa yrityksen tarpeet ja lainsäädäntöihin sekä tietosuojaan liittyvät tekijät.

Data warehouses have been in use by companies for decades. In the past few years, with the development of technology, the amount of data has grown exponentially, and traditional data warehouses are not designed to withstand ever-increasing amounts of data. With the development of cloud technology, they offer new solutions for more and more areas. One of these is data warehousing. With the almost unlimited storage space and computing power of cloud services, companies can move their data warehousing to the cloud and thus achieve great benefits. The purpose of this thesis was to find out more about the benefits that companies can derive from switching from a traditional data warehouse to a cloud-based data warehouse. The key question that this thesis revolves around is: “What benefits could companies gain by switching from traditional data warehouse to cloud-based data warehouse? The thesis was conducted by conducting first a literature review on the topic, followed by verifying the observations through an empirical section. The empirical section of the thesis was conducted as a qualitative study, and data was collected through document analysis. The material used in document analysis included websites of cloud service providers and their users, as well as blogs and related videos. The purpose of the study was to connect the framework created through literature review on the benefits of cloud-based data warehousing to a more practical level. The results of the study showed that cloud-based data warehouses bring benefits to businesses, including cost, scalability, and time, but there are also other major factors that companies need to keep in mind when switching from traditional solutions to the cloud. These factors include the company's needs and factors related to legislation and data protection.
