Motivaatio on keskeinen tekijä liikkumisen kannalta.
According to the Liitu survey (2019), in the spring of 2018, Only slightly more than a third of the 7–15-year-olds exercised according to the physical activity recommendations. Some children and adolescents are at risk of being completely excluded from physical activity. Motivation is a key factor in physical activity. Those who are internally motivated from exercise, enjoy exercise and sports, and are more likely to get a lifelong lifestyle from it. The work is based on Deci and Ryan’s (2017) self-determination theory, which has been able to explain people’s motivation in different life contexts. The theory is based on the satisfaction of three basic psychological needs; autonomy, competence and social relatedness. Satisfying the three basic psychological needs supports intrinsic motivation and well-being. Social support may have an effect on the quality of exercise motivation in different exercise environments. In this study, social support sources are parents, physical education teachers, friends and coaches of children and adolescents. This work uses the material from the Taiturit (2022) project, which investigated the associations between social support and the exersice motivation of children and adolescents aged 10–13 years. During the autumn of 2021, material was collected from 250 children aged 10 to 13 and their parents, and this material serves as the material for this master's study. In total, the sample of the Taiturit project will be 950 children and their parents. The Taiturit project is a follow-up to the Taitavat tenavat and Liikkuva perhe -projects. According to this study, of the social supporters, only friends were associated with intrinsic motivation. The mother of the family and the age of the child or adolescent were associated with external regulation. Of the basic psychological needs, experiences of competence were associated with internal motivation and experiences of autonomy with external regulation. According to the main results of our study, the social support of friends for the experiences of competence was associated with intrinsic motivation of children and adolescents. The father’s social support for the experiences of autonomy was associated with external regulation. In addition, the more social support was received from the coach for relatedness experiences, the less externally motivated they were. According to this study, the social support from friends and the experiences of competence seems to be most strongly associated with internal exercise motivation of children and adolescents. On the other hand, social support from parents and experiences of autonomy seems to be most strongly associated with external exercise motivation of children and adolescents. The form of exercise motivation depends on how the basic psychological needs of children and adolescents are satisfied by social supporters in different exercise environments. Our research results confirmed previous research results, but were also inconsistent with them as well as with the entire theoretical basis. This creates a need for further research.en
