The study deals with the university studies of Scandinavians abroad from the Middle Ages till the 17th century. The studies that have been made on the subject have been scattered, and there have been no reports on which Scandinavians were attracted by Continental universities and why, before Scandinavia's own universities had established themselves. The study explains how common it was to study at the foreign universities in each country and how it was geographically divided in different periods. The motives of unviesity studies, the social background of the students and the financing of the studies have also been explained. According to the study, medieval university studies mainly served the Church. The importance of the reformation has also been emphasized. At the beginning of modern times the social background of university students becomes more varied. Al the same time the governemental posts begin interest unviersity students, which has also led to the increase of
noblemen at the universities. As soon as the Scandinavian universities became established, studying abroad became almost non-existent.
