Weighted Sobolev spaces are used to settle questions of existence and uniqueness of solutions to exterior problems for the Helmholtz equation. Furthermore, it is shown that this approach can cater for inhomogeneous terms in the problem that are only required to vanish asymptotically at infinity. In contrast to the Rellich–Sommerfeld radiation condition which, in a Hilbert space setting, requires that all radiating solutions of the Helmholtz equation should satisfy a condition of the form (∂/∂r−ik)u∈L2(Ω),r=|x|∈Ω⊂Rn, it is shown here that radiating solutions satisfy a condition of the form (1+r)−12(ln(e+r))−12δu∈L2(Ω),0<δ<12, and, moreover, such solutions satisfy the classical Sommerfeld condition u=O(r−12(n−1)),r→∞. Furthermore, the approach avoids many of the difficulties usually associated with applications of the Poincaré inequality and the Sobolev embedding theorems.

On a topology optimization problem governed by two-dimensional Helmholtz equation
Haslinger, Jaroslav; Mäkinen, Raino (Springer New York LLC, 2015)The paper deals with a class of shape/topology optimization problems governed by the Helmholtz equation in 2D. To guarantee the existence of minimizers, the relaxation is necessary. Two numerical methods for solving ... -
Refined instability estimates for some inverse problems
Kow, Pu-Zhao; Wang, Jenn-Nan (American Institute of Mathematical Sciences (AIMS), 2022)Many inverse problems are known to be ill-posed. The ill-posedness can be manifested by an instability estimate of exponential type, first derived by Mandache [29]. In this work, based on Mandache's idea, we refine the ... -
A fast Fourier transform based direct solver for the Helmholtz problem
Toivanen, Jari; Wolfmayr, Monika (John Wiley & Sons, 2020)This article is devoted to the efficient numerical solution of the Helmholtz equation in a two‐ or three‐dimensional (2D or 3D) rectangular domain with an absorbing boundary condition (ABC). The Helmholtz problem is ... -
Traces of weighted function spaces : Dyadic norms and Whitney extensions
Koskela, Pekka; Soto, Tomás; Wang, Zhuang (Springer, 2017)The trace spaces of Sobolev spaces and related fractional smoothness spaces have been an active area of research since the work of Nikolskii, Aronszajn, Slobodetskii, Babich and Gagliardo among others in the 1950’s. In ... -
Sharp capacity estimates for annuli in weighted R^n and in metric spaces
Björn, Anders; Björn, Jana; Lehrbäck, Juha (Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2017)We obtain estimates for the nonlinear variational capacity of annuli in weighted Rn and in metric spaces. We introduce four different (pointwise) exponent sets, show that they all play fundamental roles for capacity ...
