A single isolated ski was suspended from a six-component wind tunnel balance and three angles, the angle of attack, the yaw angle and the edge angle were adjustable during the test. Increasing yaw angle from 0 to 15° increased the lift coefficient CL from 0.42 to 0.90 at edge angle 0° and from 0.70 to 0.87 at edge angle 10°, respectively. Increasing yaw angle also increased the sensitivity of the ski to changes in edge angle, i.e., increasing the edge angle (20°–45°) decreased the CL and the ratio C2L/CDCL2/CD with large yaw angles. However, to maximize the lift-to-drag ratio with a typical angle of attack of 30° in ski jumping, it may be reasonable to have an edge angle of 5°–10° on skis as the ratio C2L/CDCL2/CD increased from 1.24 to 1.35 when edge angle increased from 0° to 10°.

The effect of wind on jumping distance in ski jumping depends on jumpers’ aerodynamic characteristics
Virmavirta, Mikko; Kivekäs, Juha (Elsevier, 2022)Several studies have suggested re-evaluation of the wind compensation system (WCS) of the International Ski Federation (FIS). It was introduced in 2009, and since then, the system has been modified considerably, but major ... -
Effects of Aerodynamic Drag and Drafting on Propulsive Force and Oxygen Consumption in Double Poling Cross-country Skiing
Ainegren, Mats; Linnamo, Vesa; Lindinger, Stefan (Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, 2022)Purpose To investigate the effects of aerodynamic drag and drafting on propulsive force (FPROP), drag area (CDA), oxygen cost (V˙O2), metabolic rate (E˙) and heart rate (HR) during roller skiing on a treadmill in a wind ... -
A heuristic model-based approach for compensating wind effects in ski jumping
Jung, Alexander; Müller, Wolfram; Virmavirta, Mikko (Elsevier Ltd., 2021)Wind influences the jump length in ski jumping, which raises questions about the fairness. To counteract the wind problem, the International Ski Federation has introduced a wind compensation system in 2009: time-averaged ... -
"Taiteilijat, jotka eivät osaa tehdä näköispatsasta, kannattavat tietenkin abstraktia" : Matti Nykäsen muistomerkistä vuonna 2019 käyty keskustelu Keskisuomalainen-lehdessä
Niemi, Hanna (2020)Mäkihyppääjä Matti Nykäsen kuoltua helmikuussa 2019 alkoi vilkas keskustelu siitä, tulisiko hänelle pystyttää muistomerkki Jyväskylään, ja millainen tämän teoksen tulisi olla. Kandidaatintutkielmassani perehdyn siihen, ... -
Suomalaisen mäkihypyn laajeneminen, sosiaalinen kiinnittyminen ja tavoitteellisuus
Björn, Ismo; Itkonen, Hannu (Suomen urheiluhistoriallinen seura, 2016)The purpose of the article is to analyse the expansion of Finnish ski jumping. The main research questions are: who were the early actors in Finnish ski jumping; which were the social backgrounds of the ski jumping pioneers; ...
