Spatial and seasonal variation in the abundance and composition of phytoplankton and other basal resources (bacteria, terrestrial detritus) influence the availability of essen-tial polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) for upper trophic levels in lake food webs. We studied accumulation, composition and content of fatty acids in planktivorous ven-dace (Coregonus albula) muscle tissue during the summer feeding period (May to late September) in six boreal lakes. Vendace muscle fatty acid content increased from ~17.7 mg/g DW to ~28.1 mg/g DW from spring to summer, corresponding to a ~59% increase in total fatty acids. PUFA accounted for 45%–65% of all fatty acids, and the most abundant fatty acid was docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, 22:6n- 3). The DHA con-tent remained relatively constant throughout the sampling period (~7–8 mg/g DW), but the proportion of DHA decreased from ~40% in spring to ~30% in summer and autumn. The decrease in DHA proportion was due to accumulation of other fatty acids, primarily C18 PUFA (predominantly synthetised by algae) and monounsaturated fatty acids. A similar fatty acid accumulation pattern was observed in lipid storing co-pepods, an important prey for planktivorous vendace. The abundance of bacterial and terrestrial biomarker fatty acids in vendace muscle and prey items was low (<5% and <0.1% respectively). The increase in weight and the deposition of internal energy stores in vendace were achieved predominantly by algae- based food chain. This has ecological implications, as vendace requires sufficient lipid stores for reproduction in autumn and survival over winter. ...

Recruitment variability in vendace, Coregonus albula (L.), and its consequences for vendace harvesting Marjomäki, Timo J. (Jyväskylän yliopisto, 2003)Timo Marjomäki tutkii väitöskirjassaan muikun rekryyttimäärän (=vuosiluokan runsaus ensimmäisen elinvuoden syksyllä tai talvella) vuosien välisen runsaudenvaihtelun ominaispiirteitä ja syitä sekä tarkasteli vaihtelun ...
Genetic-based evaluation of management units for sustainable vendace (Coregonus albula) fisheries in a large lake system Karjalainen, Juha; Sjövik, Rosanna; Väänänen, Tuula; Sävilammi, Tiina; Sundberg, Lotta-Riina; Uusi-Heikkilä, Silva; Marjomäki, Timo J. (Elsevier, 2022)The goal of the processing industry, trade and consumers is to get eco-labelled freshwater fish products from sustainable fisheries into the market as soon as possible. The fourth largest natural lake system in Europe, the ...
Vendace (Coregonus albula) Disperse Their Eggs Widely during Spawning Karjalainen, Juha; Tuloisela, Markus; Nyholm, Kristiina; Marjomäki, Timo J. (Finnish Zoological and Botanical Publishing Board, 2021)Depending on their reproductive strategy, different fish species either aggregate or disperse eggs and larvae in their reproductive habitat. Because yolk-sac larvae of vendace (Coregonus albula) disperse widely across the ...
Lifting the Vendace, Coregonus albula, on the Life Table : Survival, Growth and Reproduction in Different Life-Stages during Very High and Low Abundance Regimes Marjomäki, Timo J.; Valkeajärvi, Pentti; Karjalainen, Juha (Finnish Zoological and Botanical Publishing Board, 2021)We analyzed the variability in vendace population parameters in the context of a life table. Parameters related to growth, fecundity and survival were estimated for post-recruitment (age > 1 growing season) life stages of ...
Communal pair spawning behaviour of vendace (Coregonus albula) in the dark Karjalainen, Juha; Marjomäki, Timo (Wiley-Blackwell Publishing, Inc., 2018)Mating in nature is rarely random, and most fish species have refined mating systems. The vendace (Coregonus albula) is a short‐lived, small‐sized, cold‐water‐adapted pelagic schooling species that is known to spawn in ...
