Somalialaistaustaiset nuoret nimistönkäyttäjinä Itä-Helsingissä

Abstract

Artikkelin tutkimuskohteena ovat Itä-Helsingissä asuvat somalialaistaustaiset nuoret. Tutkimuksessa tarkastellaan somalialaistaustaisten nuorten omassa asuinympäristössään käyttämää paikannimistöä sekä nimistöhaastattelujen tavoitteita ja tuloksia.

Tutkimuksen aineistona on viiden iältään 12–17-vuotiaan somalialaistaustaisen haastattelut, jotka on tehty vuonna 2008. Haastattelut ovat olleet ryhmähaastatteluja, joissa nuoret keskustelevat omasta asuinympäristöstään. Tukiaineistona on käytetty sekä aikuisten somalialaistaustaisten että suomalaistaustaisten itähelsinkiläisten haastatteluja.

Tutkimus liittyy kahteen Suomen Akatemian hankkeeseen: Nimimaiseman muutos Helsingin sosiolingvistisesti moninaistuvissa kaupunginosissa ja Helsingin suomea: monimuotoisuus, sosiaalinen identiteetti ja kielelliset asenteet kaupunkiympäristössä. Metodisesti tutkimuksessa nojaudutaan ensisijaisesti sosio- ja -kansanonomastiikkaan sekä haastatteluntutkimukseen.

Somalialaistaustaiset nuoret käyttävät pääosin samaa nimistöä kuin alueen suomalaistaustaiset asukkaat. Lisäksi heillä on käytössään somalinkielistä nimistöä, jota on annettu tärkeille ja tutuille paikoille ja joille kantasuomalaisilla ei välttämättä ole nimeä. Nimistön käytön voi tulkita heijastavan nuorten identiteettiä: toisaalta he identifioituvat alueen ”tavallisiksi” asukkaiksi, mutta toisaalta he ilmentävät somalinkielisen nimistön käytöllään myös somalialaista identiteettiä. Nimien Mogadishu ja Mogadishu Avenue historia ja käyttö osoittaa, kuinka alun perin kantaväestön käyttöön ottamista nimistä on tullut osa somalialaistaustaisten omaa nimistöä ja identiteettiä.

Tutkimuksessa tarkastellaan konkreettisten esimerkkien avulla nimistöhaastattelujen metodologiaa. Itse tilanne ja haastattelijan toiminta osoittautuvat keskeisiksi, kun tarkastellaan sitä, millaista aineistoa haastatellessa saadaan talteen. Haastateltavat pyrkivät usein tuottamaan nimistöä, jota uskovat haastattelijan arvostavan. Tälläkin tavoin saatu nimistö on kuitenkin todellista ja käytössä olevaa nimistöä.

Place names of Somali youths in Eastern Helsinki

The subjects of the research in this paper are Somali youths living in Eastern Helsinki. The research explores the toponymy that Somali youths use to describe their living environment, and also examines the objectives and results of the interviews conducted through the course of the research.

The material used in this research consists of five interviews with young Somalis between the ages of 12 and 17. All five interviews were conducted during 2008. These interviews took the form of focus-group in-depth interviews in which the youths discussed issues surrounding their own living environments. Supporting material includes interviews with adult Somalis and local Finnish people living in Eastern Helsinki.

This research is part of two projects supported by the Academy of Finland: ”Transformation of onomastic landscape in sociolinguistically diversifying neighbourhoods of Helsinki” and ”Helsinki Finnish: diversity, social identity and linguistic attitudes in an urban context”. From a methodological perspective, the research primarily employs the methods of socio- and folk onomastics and interview analysis.

In general Somali youths use the same names to designate given places as Finnish people living in the same area. In addition to this, they use Somali names given to important or familiar places, and for which the local Finnish population may have no name at all. The use of this separate toponymy can be seen as reflecting the Somali youths’ personality: on the one hand they identify as ”regular” local residents, while at the same time expressing their Somali identity through the use of Somali-language place names. The history and use of names such as Mogadishu and Mogadishu Avenue demonstrate the extent to which the use of names and phrases from their own culture now shapes the identity of Somali youths – and the toponymy they use – in Finland today.

Using a number of concrete examples, this research examines the methodology of onomastic interviews. The interview situation and the role of the interviewer become of crucial importance when we examine what material is eventually recorded in the course of the interview. Interviewees often try to produce the kind of toponymy that they think the interviewer will value. However, the toponymy recorded using this method is genuine and in active use.
