Tutkimuksen tarkoituksena on tutkia iäkkäiden vapaaehtoistyöntekijöiden syitä tehdä vapaaehtoistyötä. Pyrin selvittämään, mitkä ovat vapaaehtoistoimintaan motivoivat tekijät. Tutkimusaineiston muodostavat 9 vapaaehtoistyöntekijän haastattelua, jotka toteut ettiin puolistrukturoituna teemahaastatteluina helmikuussa 2016. Aineisto analysoitiin teoriasidonnaisesti motivaatioteorioiden pohjalta sisällönanalyysia käyttäen. Vapaaehtoistyö on noussut yhdeksi keskeiseksi yhteiskunnalliseksi kysymykseksi viimeisten vuosikymmenten aikana. Suomalaista vapaaehtoistyötä on tutkittu varsin vähän. Tutkimuksen perusteella ikääntyneiden vapaaehtoistyön motiiveissa korostuvat moninaiset yksilölliset motiivit, joilla on merkittävä yhteys yhteisöllisyyteen. Motivaatioteoriat soveltuvat hyvin vapaaehtoisuuden tutkimiseen.
Voluntary work from the point of view of older voluntary workers. The purpose of this research is to study the reasons of older voluntary workers for doing voluntary work. I aim to find out what the motivating factors for voluntary activities are. The research material is comprised of the interviews of nine voluntary workers executed as semi-structured theme interviews in February 2016. The material was analyzed on the basis of motivation theories by using content analysis. Voluntary work has become a central societal issue during the past decades. The society and public authority expect partnership from third sector operators in solving the changing issues of service provision. Strong pressure is targeted at both organizing welfare services and non-governmental organizations from outside Europe, as well. Finnish voluntary work has been studied quite little. This research examines voluntary work specifically from the point of view of voluntary workers. According to the research results, the desire to help is seen as a significant motivating factor for voluntary work. Regarding individual resources, health, keeping in touch with friends, and ties to voluntary organizations as well as spirituality have a strong impact on the motivating factors for voluntary work. My central research result is that the desire to help is not merely unselfish and altruistic helping where the wellbeing of another and increasing it are put before everything else. Helping produces pleasure for the actor him-/herself, as well, and is even seen as a selfish activity. Furthermore, excess amount of voluntary work and the difficulty to decline voluntary work also come up clearly in the study. On the basis of the research, diverse individual motivations that have a significant connection with communality are highlighted in the motivations of older volunteers. Motivation theories are well suited for studying voluntary work. The key themes of functional analyses are promising in clarifying the complex motivation grounds of voluntary activities. Understanding the connection between the motives and resources of older volunteers also helps in the recruitment of volunteers. Further research should be directed at factors increasing the coping and satisfaction of older voluntary workers and their significance without overlooking the concrete appreciation of voluntary work.en
