Tutkimusalueen virallinen nimi on Service Science Management and Engineering, ja sen lanseerasi IBM vuonna 2004. Tarve Service sciencen, eli palveluliiketoiminnan, tutkimiselle ja kehittämiselle kumpuaa palveluiden kasvaneesta roolista elinkeinoelämässä.
