Human activity has either directly or indirectly caused decline and even extinction in the populations of several species. Captive breeding projects aim to maintain a viable population of the species by releasing captive-bred individuals into the wild. However, captive environments can differ a lot from natural habitats and the selection pressures on captive animals are different from those in the wild. If captive breeding continues for several generations, individuals adapt to the captive conditions, and differ from wild individuals. In Finland, the populations of grey partridges (Perdix perdix) have declined as a result of agricultural environmental change. The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry has prepared a management plan for the populations of Finnish grey partridges. The plan aims to return viable populations of the grey partridges to areas where they have previously been common. Grey partridges are going to be restored to their natural habitats by improving the habitats and possibly releasing captive bred individuals into suitable areas. The purpose of my master's thesis was to find out if the anti-predator behaviour differs between two different subspecies of grey partridges, so called “eastern” subspecies (P. p. lucida) that is naturally found in Finland and “western” subspecies (P. p. perdix) that is naturally found further south. Chicks of grey partridges were divided into groups and their behaviour was repeatedly tested by using open-field tests and hawk tests at three different ages. According to my results the eastern chicks were more active than the western ones. When the chicks were about 1.5 months old, there were differences between subspecies in their responses to a hawk model. The eastern chicks scattered significantly more than the western ones. Also each testing time when the hawk model had flown over the chicks the more passive western ones remained in place for a longer period of time than the eastern ones. It would be important to find out whether the greater activity of the eastern chicks does have any real benefits for their survival in the wild. There is need for further studies when deciding whether we are going to build up the number of individuals of the eastern grey partridge in Finland by using captive-bred individuals or not.en
