Once in a lifetime : lukiolaisten kokemuksia Vanhat Tanssit -kurssista ja -tapahtumasta

Tutkimuksen tarkoituksena oli selvittää lukion toisen vuosikurssin opiskelijoiden näkemyksiä ja kokemuksia Vanhat Tanssit -kurssista ja -tapahtumasta. Tutkimuksessa tarkasteltiin, millaisia merkityksiä opiskelijat antavat tapahtumalle. Tavoitteena oli kuvata, selittää ja ymmärtää nuorten kokemuksia ja merkityksellisinä pitämiä asioita. Tutkimuksella haluttiin myös selvittää opiskelijoiden Vanhat Tanssit -kurssille osallistumisen sekä osallistumattomuuden syitä.

Aineisto on laadullinen tapaustutkimus, jossa käytettiin hermeneuttis-fenomenologista otetta. Tutkimukseen osallistui erään eteläsuomalaisen lukion 39 opiskelijaa, joista tyttöjä oli 21 ja poikia 18. Tutkimusaineisto kerättiin marraskuussa 2014. Aineisto koostuu opiskelijoiden vapaa-ajallaan kirjoittamista ainekirjoituksista. Opiskelijat kirjoittivat aineen joko otsikolla Kokemuksia Vanhat Tanssit -kurssista ja -tapahtumasta (N=33) tai Miksi en osallistunut kurssille? (N=6). Aineisto analysoitiin laadullisella sisällönanalyysillä ja teemoittelemalla.

Tutkimus osoitti, että Vanhat Tanssit -kurssilla ja -tapahtumalla on tärkeä merkitys lukiolaisten toisen vuoden opiskelussa. Nuoret kirjoittivat runsaasti parinvalinnasta, ulkonäkötekijöistä, esiintymisistä sekä esiintymisjännityksestä. Tutkimuksen nuoret pitivät tanssien harjoittelua tärkeänä osana Vanhat Tanssit -kurssia ja nuoret kehuivat harjoitusten ilmapiiriä. Tanssien ohella oheistoiminta, nousi merkitykselliseksi osa-alueeksi, jossa tärkeää oli yhdessä oleminen ja yhdessä tekeminen. Kurssi vaikutti myönteisesti usean nuoren suhtautumiseen tanssimista kohtaan. Onnistumisen kokemukset lisäsivät itseluottamusta omaan tanssimiseen, minkä uskottiin rohkaisevan myöhemmin vapaa-ajallakin tanssimaan paritansseja. Tärkeänä kurssin antina nuoret pitivät myös tanssitaidon oppimista. Vanhat Tanssit -kurssi ja -tapahtuma oli opiskelijoille arvokas yhteisöllinen kokemus. Suurin osa tutkimuksen nuorista kertoi Vanhojen tanssien vaikuttaneen myönteisesti ryhmän yhteenkuuluvuuteen ja yhteishenkeen. Opiskelijat pitivät erityisen tärkeänä sitä, keiden kanssa tapahtuman sai kokea. Erityisesti tytöille tapahtuman kokeminen hyvien kavereiden kanssa oli arvokkaampaa kuin itse tanssiminen. Tärkeäksi nousi myös vanhojen tanssien kokeminen kyseisessä lukiossa kyseisen ryhmän kanssa ennen koulun lakkauttamista. Tutkimuksemme nuoret kokivat, että Vanhat Tanssit ovat osa yleissivistystä ja hieno perinne lukioissa. Opiskelijat näkivät erilaisten tapahtumien tuovan mielekästä vaihtelua teoriapainotteiseen opiskeluun. Merkittävimmiksi Vanhat Tanssit -kurssille osallistumisen syiksi nousivat kavereiden osallistuminen, oman sisaruksen tai sukulaisen esimerkin seuraaminen sekä opettajan tai oman vanhemman houkuttelu. Mikään yksi erityinen tekijä ei sitä vastoin noussut selkeäksi osallistumattomuuden syyksi.

The purpose of this study was to find out opinions and experiences of the Finnish Upper Secondary School Senior Dance course and the Senior Dance event. The present study examines the meanings students give to the course. The aim was to describe, explain and understand student’s experiences and things that they consider meaningful. The purpose was also to find out what motivated the students to attend to the course and why some of the students didn’t take part to the course.

The present study is a qualitative case study. Hermeneutic phenomenological research approach was used to explore the narrative identities of the participants, who were students from a certain, southern Finland upper secondary school. There were 39 students, 21 girls and 18 boys. The data was collected during November 2014. The data was generated from student’s essays that they wrote on their spare time. The topics of the essays were ”Experiences of the Finnish Senior Dance course and –event” (N=33) or ”Why I didn’t attend to the course?” (N=6). The data was analysed using qualitative content analysis and thematic analysis. Quality of data and analysis was enhanced by concentrating the analysis on rich narratives.

The findings of the present study suggest that the students find Senior Dance course and the Senior Dance event meaningful. The common topics that the students wrote were choosing their partner, appearance, performances and excitement during performances. Students considered dance practices important part of the course and they praised the atmosphere of the rehearsals. Post-event activities were also meaningful. The important thing about the excessive events was that the group had a chance to be together and do things together. Attitudes towards dance became more positive. Succeeding in dancing increased self-confidence and many of the students thought that it will encourage them to dance social dances in their spare time as well. The students thought that it was important to learn to dance. The course and the event were important communal experiences for the students. Most of the participants told that the course ant the event had a positive influence on the social cohesion and the spirit of the group. The most important aspect for the students was the opportunity to dance with certain group of people. Especially girls found that it was even more important to experience the event with good friends than dancing itself. It was also important to experience the Finnish Senior Dance in the certain school with the certain group before the school was closed down. The students thought that Finnish Senior Dance is part of the common knowledge and a great tradition. Different events bring variation to theory based learning. The most significant reasons to participate to the course were participation of friends, siblings or relatives and the persuasion of the teacher or a parent. There was no specific reason why student chose not to participate to the course.
