Verkkoavusteinen opiskelu yliopiston musiikkikasvatuksen opiskelukulttuurissa

Abstract

Salavuo tutki väitöskirjassaan verkkoavusteisen opetuksen ja käytössä olevan teknisen infrastruktuurin soveltumista yliopiston musiikkikasvatuksen opetukseen ja opiskelukulttuuriin. Hän selvitti verkkoympäristön ja musiikkiteknologian tarjoamia mahdollisuuksia hajauttaa opiskelua myös lähiopetustilanteiden ulkopuolelle. Salavuo odotti verkkoympäristössä tapahtuvan vuorovaikutusta erityisesti siitä syystä, että kurssiin liittyvä toiminta ei eroa merkittävästi opiskelijoiden musiikillisesta toiminnasta vapaa-aikana.Salavuon tutkimus vahvisti aikaisemmissa tutkimuksissa esitettyä käsitystä verkkoavusteisen opetusmuodon tarpeen osoittamisen merkityksestä. Useimmat opiskelijat kokivat verkkoympäristön lähinnä sovitustehtävien palautuspaikkana, eivätkä yhteisöllisenä toimintaympäristönä. Opiskelijoiden toiminta verkkoympäristössä oli koko kurssin ajan vähäistä.– Opiskelijat ovat tottuneet hyvin pitkälle vain suorittamaan. Jotta vuorovaikutus olisi aktiivisempaa, vaaditaan opettajalta organisoitujen verkko-oppimisen mallien toteuttamista, Salavuo kommentoi tutkimuksensa tuloksia.

The main aim of this case study was to provide one viewpoint on how network-assisted learning, and the technology in use, suit the learning culture of university music education. The subject of the study was a course on arranging popular and traditional music. The main purpose of the network-based environment was to serve as an extension of the traditional learning environment. Nineteen students were given a questionnaire at the beginning and at the end of the course, and the students and teachers were interviewed after the course. The theoretical background of the study is based on theories and conceptions behind network-assisted learning, such as models of situated-, collaborative-, and self-directed learning. According to the theoretical background, the combination network environment and music technology should increase flexibility and interaction between students, and enhance possibilities to represent musical information. Information previously visible only between a teacher and a student can become constantly present for the whole community. The interaction in the network-based environment was very low. This seems to relate to the fact that the interaction was neither pre-planned nor mandatory. Still, most of the students recommended the use of the network based environment in the future. The predominant learning culture appeared to have the most influence on the way network-assisted learning was utilized. The network-based environment did increase the flexibility of learning for many students, and provided promising ways to represent information. However, technical problems associated with file formats and copyright issues caused problems, which currently may outweigh the pedagogical advantages of network-assisted music learning.
