The family Cystoviridae includes enveloped viruses with a tri-segmented dsRNA genome and a double-layered protein capsid.
The innermost protein shell is a polymerase complex responsible for genome packaging, replication and transcription.
Cystoviruses infect Gram-negative bacteria, primarily plant-pathogenic Pseudomonas syringae strains. This is a summary of
the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV) Report on the taxonomy of the Cystoviridae.

Small things matter : of phages and antibiotic resistance conferring plasmids
Mattila, Sari (University of Jyväskylä, 2016)Viruses and plasmids are small units of genetic material dependent on cells either transiently or continuously. Intriguingly, stories of these small entities intertwine in antibiotic resistance crisis. Horizontal gene ... -
Half a Century of Research on Membrane-Containing Bacteriophages: Bringing New Concepts to Modern Virology
Mäntynen, Sari; Sundberg, Lotta-Riina; Oksanen, Hanna M.; Poranen, Minna M. (MDPI AG, 2019)Half a century of research on membrane-containing phages has had a major impact on virology, providing new insights into virus diversity, evolution and ecological importance. The recent revolutionary technical advances in ... -
Bacteriophage imaging : past, present and future
De Freitas Almeida, Gabriel; Leppänen, Miika; Maasilta, Ilari; Sundberg, Lotta-Riina (Elsevier Masson, 2018)The visualization of viral particles only became possible after the advent of the electron microscope. The first bacteriophage images were published in 1940 and were soon followed by many other publications that helped to ...
