Nykymuotoiset sanomalehdet mahtuvat yhä harvemman kansalaisen arkeen.
The study examines Finns’ attitudes towards newspapers, and, more specifically, towards the basic type of Finnish newspaper, the regional daily, in the context of declining circulation numbers. The study seeks to understand the kinds of meanings non-subscribers attach to daily newspapers and their journalism. The study also investigates the changing position of the newspaper within the media market. For its theoretical framework, the study utilises the ethnographic approach to research on audiences of mass communication. The primary data of the study consists of interviews of people not subscribing to their regional newspaper. Applying the method of data-sensitive grounded theory, the study examines the interviewees’ speech in terms of the kinds of meanings they attach to their actions in relation to the newspaper. In addition to the qualitative thematic and in-depth interviews, questionnaires have been used. The study shows that the daily newspaper is going through a phase of cultural erosion which consequently changes its idea and purpose. Similarly, the readership of newspapers is gaining new shades of meaning. Non-subscription of newspapers may reduce the profitability of newspapers and dilute their journalistic quality, which in turn may impair public debate and hamper the realisation of freedom of speech. The number of subscribers is further diminished due to the weak credibility of newspapers. The newspaper is perceived as following the political elite, and due to its regionalism fails to touch those who have migrated to the circulation area of their regional newspaper from elsewhere. Due to their busy and unstable way of life, people have difficulty finding either the time or the grounds for subscribing to a newspaper. The cost of a newspaper is perceived as high compared to the benefits it offers. Furthermore, the broadsheet format is considered inconvenient and the subscription conditions rigid. The non-subscribers living on the fringe of readership still read newspapers, although not at home, but in the workplace or other public spaces. Non-subscribers view themselves as consumer-customers who have the power to decide, often depending on the nature of their family relations, whether to subscribe to a newspaper or not.en
