Tfi
dc.description.abstracthe aim of this study was to scientifically justify practices of education and teaching. The study examines school readiness and exceptional school starting. It is divided into to major parts. The first describes the tradition of school starting, that is, “the status quo”. The second describes school readiness in the light of social constructionism and asks: ”Is there, after all, a status quo as is believed?” The research task of the first part is to determine how the tradition of school readiness and exceptional school starting has been formed and how successful exceptional school starters have been. The research task of the second part is to determine what the official discourses of school readiness are and which discourses guide the school readiness talk of families. This study is a multimethodological study of special pedagogy in the field of learning difficulties that occur in the transition stage between early education and school. The study represents the third paradigm and mixed methods research. The data of the study, comprises several different sources of data, such as the norms and legislation on school starting (29 documents), official reports (64), school report data and family interviews (34).The study demonstrated that the school achievements of children with delayed school starting have been poor on a wide front. In contrast, the school achievements of those who have started school early have been good. With school starting, attention must not be focused on a child’s age but on other factors. Practices of school readiness assessment have lagged far behind measures to prevent learning difficulties. There was no support for the concept of maturation in this study – that is, the idea that difficulties would disappear after some growing up. Adults assign different meanings to school starting than children do. Adults talk about readiness and managing, which highlights deficiencies rather than abilities. Children talk about communality, activity, justice and their relationship with adults. Children do not set conditions for school starting. The talk of public officials and professional educators rarely brings up partnership in education or parental expertise. In families, decisions about a children’s school starting are tied to the concept of normality, and families are guided by tradition. An adult’s understanding of children and childhood is conceptualised through an ideal child. In the light of these research findings, it would appear advisable to build a more unified culture of education and schooling. Early education and school now lie too far apart, which has led to an unfounded emphasis on the age of children who are about to start school. Too much weight is placed on an extra year that is intended to sidestep difficulties. A delay of one year constitutes insufficient support. It may be time to consider organisational reforms. Schools should accept precisely those who need the most support for learning. For this reason, it might be advisable to accelerate school starting rather that delay it. Schools should be ready to help children to mature.en
